While we were in Carasque, we met Estela Orellana (pictured left). She is a member of one of the families that hosted our groups for the home stay.
EN: "I am Estela Orellana, and I am 37 years old. I live in Carasque, and I am a member of the embroidery workshop. I make hand-embroidered garments to sell within and outside of the country.
I am among the founders of the workshop. In 1992, the workshop began through training and support by the Catholic Church and other institutions. The workshop moved forward with the determination of each person that has worked with us, but especially through the support of our sister city Bangor, Maine, US.
I provide for my family and earn a living by working at the shop. This is why I want to find new markets and keep growing. Also, I am involved in community organizing: I am a member of the Women’s Committee, and I frequently participate in meetings and volunteer work.
ES: "Soy Estela Orellana, de 37 años de edad. Vivo en cantón Carasque. Soy miembra del taller de sastrería. Confecciono prendas y las bordo manualmente para venderlas dentro y fuera del país.
Estoy entre las fundadoras de este esfuerzo que inició en 1992 por medio de capacitaciones, y que fue respaldado por la iglesia católica y otras instituciones. El taller salió adelante con el empeño de cada una de las personas que laboramos, pero sobre todo por el respaldo del hermanamiento de Bangor Maine en EEUU.
Con los recursos que obtengo del taller sustento la economía familiar. Es por ello que deseo que encontremos nuevos mercados y así seguir creciendo. Además, estoy involucrada en la organización de mi comunidad: soy miembra del comité de mujeres, participo frecuentemente en reuniones y trabajos sociales de forma voluntaria.
