Artist residency at Chiangdao Blue, Chiangmai, Thailand::

The downstairs working & living space, together with the private room and terrace upstairs, is slowly leading us to think about home textiles — curtains, bed sheets, and other everyday fabrics.

Just imagining the types of fabrics, the colors, and the patterns to dye already feels both exciting and quietly challenging.

Today, Bai Mai, a young Hmong woman from the Huay Luek community in Chiangdao, came to dye h**p fabric with natural indigo for the 2026 Koyori project.

In the past, she used chemically dyed fabrics for her clothing work. This time, we invited her to explore natural indigo and experience the process by herself.
Bai Mai works together with her mother, who creates traditional Hmong wax-resist patterns, while Bai Mai designs and sews the garments.

Through the Koyori project, we could see her talent and potential clearly. We hoped this experience might help add new value to her work and open further possibilities for her future creations.

Today, Bai Mai showed us how thoughtful, quick to learn, and naturally skillful she is.

Artist residency at Studio Chiangdao Blue::

Almost complete, with only a few quiet details left before opening.

Upstairs is a private room with a wide terrace and panoramic views of Mt. Chiangdao.

Downstairs is a working & living space connected to the dye studio.

A place for exploring plant-based natural colors from local materials — through textile, paper, and wood.

Kakishibu and ebony berry tannins, long used in traditional fabric, wood and paper practices, are also part of the process here.

A quiet space to explore, experiment, and create freely — without right or wrong.

Strobilanthes cusia / Assam indigo / Hom ห้อม/ Ryukyu Ai::

our local northern Thai indigo plant, which requires a very specific environment to grow — cool air, humidity, and soft sunlight.

The homeland of Assam indigo is the mountain forest, especially along streams or mountain valleys (山の沢).

Because the leaves are large and thick, they contain a rich amount of indigo pigment. Another unique characteristic is that the indigo pigment is found not only in the leaves, but also throughout the stems and branches.

Today, we harvested a small amount of Hom leaves from our limited plantation to extract indigo pigment and make indigo paste.

Last week, almost the entire week was spent gathering extra hands to clear the fast-growing weeds, encouraged by heavy rain and good sunlight.

After the weeding was finished, only a small amount of cow manure was enough to nourish the soil.

Indigofera tinctoria and Indigofera suffruticosa are legume plants that naturally help improve the soil.

They are also medicinal plants that rarely suffer from serious disease or insect problems. In that sense, organic indigo farming is not as difficult as many people imagine.

The part that truly requires labor and time is the cost of hiring workers for hand weeding.

Chiangdao Blue’s original kakishibu dyed fisherman pants::

For more than 15 years, I have been quietly learning about kakishibu and the unique qualities of kaki tannin — antibacterial, UV protective, and naturally water repellent.

After years of experiments, failures, and observation, I finally began using my own fermented kakishibu in 2025 for textiles, wood, and paper.

These workwear-style fisherman pants are dyed with home-fermented kakishibu, creating a warm orange-brown tone and a gentle crisp “shari” texture.

A quiet color journey rooted in nature and local wisdom.

2 active photographers from New York & their indigo blue journey::

Their first indigo blue experience — relaxed, open, and simply themselves.

A quiet space for free creativity, while we gently support from a distance.

Hope they carry home some good traveling moments from Chiangdao in the early rainy season.

Two years ago, we collaborated with a photographer from Bangkok for the exhibition “People of Chiangdao” at Makhampom Art Space.

The textile works were inspired by Mt. Chiangdao and the cultural memories of Chiangdao as an old border town connected to Assam tea and barter trade.

Three large textile tapestries were created in indigo blue, catechu brown, and sappan wood pink, then layered with stencil motifs telling different local stories — butterflies, tea trade, and mountain life.

The works were displayed hanging openly beneath the gallery roof, exposed to natural light for two years.

The indigo and tannin-rich catechu brown still remain deep and strong, while the sappan pink has faded softly over time, as sappan wood naturally has moderate lightfastness.

These textiles became a quiet reminder that the beauty and durability of natural dyes depend on choosing colors carefully in relation to their use and environment.

Five years ago, we created a large linen textile for a bed headboard using the simple technique of Maki-age Shibori.

The design was inspired by the silhouette of Mt. Chiangdao and the shape of stars.

Simple shibori techniques, together with clear imagination, can create deeply meaningful work.

The simpler the process, the more freely people can focus on imagination without being burdened by technique.

Artist residency at Chiangdao Blue, Chiang Mai, Thailand 🇹🇭

The construction has now progressed beyond 70%.

A quiet creative and working space for textile and natural dye practice, rooted in local materials, environmentally conscious processes, and inspirations from both Thai and Japanese craft traditions.

Alongside indigo, we also work with ebony berries and kakishibu — rich tannin dyes suitable for textiles, paper, and wood.

This residency project was inspired by my own three-month artist residency experience in Kanazawa, Japan in 2022 through the UNESCO Creative Cities cultural exchange program.

Many of the learning and education activities that Chiangdao Blue now shares with local youth in Chiangdao also grew from that experience.
