Since there will be no Carnival parade again in Trinidad again this year due to the pandemic, I have decided to use my Carnival findings to create a line of Barbie princesses. At least I get to use, not only my Carnival stuff but also my creativity. I refused to be bored in this pandemic.

She's definitely one of my favourite dolls. She does a great job modeling the doll costumes I sell on my website but this was her celebrating my birthday with me which is Christmas day.

This is a case of life imitating art. When I was a fashion student in New York, many moons ago, my boyfriend bought me an eighteen inch fashion doll on which to test out my design ideas so that I could do everything in miniature before actually making the garments life size. It was a great idea because I saved on using valuable materials until I was pretty sure of my design concept. This is how, in adulthood, I started sewing clothing for fashion dolls. Long after fashion school, I continued this same practice. In this photo Ella models one of my miniature gowns that my real live model wore in a fashion show here at nightclub some years ago.

This is what I love about recycling Carnival. Someone gave me a huge costume. I believe it was a conventional individual costume. Anyway I got some great surprises when I started to take it apart. I got several boas and then when I was trying to rip out what I thought were little golden decorations off of it, I realized that it was a meshy material with decorations. The fabric looked so much better over gold that I made this with it.
