Lori Glaze, the director of planetary science at Nasa, said the life question could only be addressed using the sophisticated techniques that were available on Earth.

"We can do a lot in situ with our remote-sensing instruments but we can't take all of our laboratory equipment and all of our human expertise to the surface of Mars. So we bring the samples back here, and then we can not only use all of our state of the art equipment but we'll have those samples for decades and we can come up with new ideas [to test the samples that] we haven't even dreamed of yet," she told BBC News.

Ginny made history in 2021 by becoming the first vehicle to achieve powered flight on another world.

It was a straight-up-and-down manoeuvre to an altitude of only 3m, but it proved the principle.

Since then, the chopper has flown higher and further on 35 more occasions.

Not bad for what was supposed to be just a short technology demonstration. But the opportunities a scout helicopter affords were simply too good for Nasa to pass up.

The event, a gamma-ray burst, was detected by a space telescope and a NASA observatory.

A team of scientists including University of Leicester physicists described the minute-long blast as a rare cosmic event.

They said they hoped their research would help the study of future events.

Gamma ray bursts are the most powerful explosions known in the universe.

This particular explosion, from a nearby galaxy, was detected in December 2021.

Australian stonecrop, also known as New Zealand pygmy w**d, has been crowding out native plants and animals at Thompson Common, near Watton, Norfolk.

It was found in 10 ponds at the site, which is known for its 400 pingos, or dips, formed during the last Ice Age.

"It's an increasing problem," said Norfolk Pond Project's Andy Hind.

Excavations found pottery and animal bones pointing to evidence of a communal area for feasts as part of the proposed work on the A428 between the Black Cat roundabout in Bedfordshire and Caxton Gibbet in Cambridgeshire.

Experts believe the discoveries could highlight changes in diet and gifting.

Earlier this year experts also found evidence of Roman era beer brewing.

During the dig, the team from the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) uncovered a pit full of animal bones, pottery and burnt stones.

They believe it showed evidence of a large fire which Iron Age communities would have gathered around for feasts, between 800BC and AD43.

Former minister Simon Clarke said the ex-prime ministers were supporting his bid to relax restrictions through the Levelling Up Bill.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has scrapped a move by predecessor Ms Truss to relax the rules.

He has said he wants to prioritise building turbines offshore instead.

Mr Clarke has tabled an amendment to the Levelling Up Bill that would overturn a planning clampdown introduced by former PM David Cameron in 2015.

A spokesman for Mr Johnson has confirmed to the BBC he supports the amendment. Ms Truss has been approached for comment.

Accessibility and aesthetics were key - but it didn't matter if the desks and chairs had already been used by someone else. That just meant they came at a bargain price.

"I probably saved about 19, 20 grand by kitting out with second-hand furniture," she says.

The pandemic caused a huge shift in working practices. While some have fully embraced working from home, others are returning to the office, perhaps part-time. As a result, many companies are downsizing central offices and that means a glut of second-hand desks, chairs and filing cabinets is available to those who want them.

In Dr Brearley's case, the new office is sometimes empty since her staff choose to work from home much of the time - but she argues it's worth having anyway.

"We now have a tried-and-tested method to start reversing the damage done to our rivers," said project manager Ben Eardley.

A pilot project which took place in 2019 - called Stage 0 - is now being scaled up to cover 15 hectares of river and landscape.

Mr Eardley said: "'Stage 0' floodplain reconnection completely resets natural processes...and lets the river decide what it wants to be.

"By seeing the river and its surrounding landscape as a whole, we can build resilience and boost biodiversity."

More than 20 swans have been found dead at a Glasgow park in a bird flu scare.

Twelve birds were initially found at Hogganfield Park on Tuesday, but Glasgow City Council has confirmed that a further 11 swans have died.

The council is working on the assumption that the cause of death is avian flu.

Hogganfield Loch is considered Glasgow's best site for wintering water birds such as whooper swan and goldeneye duck.

The park, home to a large population of swans, is part of the Seven Lochs Gateway.

The government met on Saturday to assess the scale of the floods which have submerged a third of the country.

At least one in three of the victims of the flooding are said to be children.

Government minister Ahsan Iqbal said that the country did not have the resources to deal with the unprecedented crisis.

The flooding was the worst climate-induced disaster in recent world history, he said.

Some 1.4 million homes had been destroyed in record monsoon rains which have affected more than 33 million people.

The show is also home to a huge food hall which celebrates produce from the county, including cakes, gin, beer and cheese.

Lisa Smith, from Ginger Bakers, said: "It's our county show and we want to be here to see our customers, show off our cakes and have fun."

Chief executive of the organisers, Westmorland County Agricultural Society, Christine Knipe said this year was a test for the two-day format after extending it because of restrictions around the pandemic last year.

Ms Knipe said: "The show was missed in 2020 as it's a social hub for our rural communities.

"We are so proud we are a traditional agriculture show with our links to the countryside and the biggest food hall of local foods in the North West of England, all local producers within a 50 mile (80km) radius."

A stargazing festival is set to return to the Lake District this autumn.

Cumbria's Dark Skies Festival runs from 28 October to 12 November and features astronomy events as well as night-time canoeing and trail-running.

It is being organised by several groups including Cumbria Tourism, Forestry England and Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

Jack Ellerby from Friends of the Lake District said connecting with nature after dark "ignites people's sense of wonder and awe" in the universe.
