So you’re the proud owner of one of Samsung’s foldables. Look at you, you early adopter! There are obviously a few more ways to use your phone than a typical slab-style phone, and that’s probably why you bought one.

Flex mode is one of those features. That’s basically just a term for whenever you use the phone’s main screen folded halfway. It’s most useful if you want to set the phone down and use it hands-free, like for video calls, and some apps are optimized by default to take advantage of it.

Here’s how to use Flex mode with the apps that support it natively — and also how to enable it for apps that don’t. I tested these steps on a Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 running One UI 4.1.1.

FOR APPS THAT SUPPORT FLEX MODE
To enter Flex mode, make sure you have the orientation lock turned off (check for the lock icon in the notification / quick settings shade), then open an app and fold the phone screen halfway like a laptop or a makeup compact. If the app supports it, you’ll see the content move to the top screen and — usually — a set of controls appear at the bottom. This varies by app; also, not every app that supports Flex mode on the Fold is supported on the Flip.

Here’s a list of apps that support Flex mode by default on the Fold 4:

Calculator
Calendar
Camera
Clock
Google Duo
Gallery
Internet
Phone
Samsung Free
Samsung Health
Samsung TV Plus
YouTube
Zoom

Put that folding phone to work.

Google announced on August 15th, 2022, that it would begin rolling out the Android 13 update to its portfolio of Pixel devices. As is usual with Android updates, however, this doesn’t mean that even if you have a qualifying Pixel device (a Pixel 4 or newer, basically), you’ll immediately see the update available. Google often takes a number of weeks to deliver the update to all devices out there.

While there’s always the solution of using Android’s developer tools, a Mac or PC, and a USB cable to sideload the update immediately, an easier, computer-free option exists as well. If you’ve got a qualifying Pixel device and are tired of seeing the software update screen say there’s nothing new, here’s a trick to force the update to show up.

SHOULD I UPDATE TO ANDROID 13?
If you’re wondering if Android 13 brings a large difference to your phone from Android 12, I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t change much. There are a couple of settings in different locations and the media player in the notification tray has been jazzed up a little. But by and large, it looks and functions very similarly to Android 12 on Pixel devices, right down to the customizable theming options.

On the plus side, we’ve been running beta versions of Android 13 and have not run into any show stopping issues that would make you regret updating. There are a few more technical changes that users of certain apps might want to be aware of (Mishaal Rahman put together a handy list of 50 important changes in this Reddit post), but most people will be able to update without worry.

ENROLL IN THE ANDROID BETA PROGRAM
The first step is to enroll in Google’s Android Beta program, which has allowed adventurous Pixel owners (as well as developers) to test the new software all summer. But since the final version of Android 13 is now out, if you enroll today, you won’t receive a beta build. It will be the same version of Android that Google is slowly rolling out to everyone.

Go to the Android Beta program website on any device with a browser (including your phone) and log in to the same Google account that your phone uses.
At the top is a button to “see eligible devices.” Tap that and the page will scroll to the bottom, where you’ll hopefully see your Pixel phone.
You can then hit the “Opt in” button to join the beta. A window will pop up, and you’ll have to agree to the terms and conditions of the program and then press Confirm and Enroll.

For the impatient ones.

While protecting your privacy online has been a subject of interest for a while now, events in the news — for example, the chat history Facebook recently turned over to police — have brought it front and center. But how do you protect your privacy while staying in touch with friends and relatives? While there are a number of messaging apps that boast increased privacy features, sometimes you can’t persuade the people you want to keep in touch with to use them. What is your alternative? What, for example, if they insist on chatting with Facebook Messenger?

Well, you can start by using end-to-end encryption (E2EE) on Messenger.

Basically, end-to-end encryption means that nobody — even Facebook’s company Meta — should be able to read what is in your chat. In short, this is accomplished by each party’s account being assigned a special key; only the account with that key can unlock the message. Currently, Meta has E2EE available on its Messenger platform but only on a per-chat basis. The company has announced its intention to turn on E2EE by default soon, but in the meantime, if you’re about to embark on a Messenger conversation that you want to keep private, here’s how to turn it on. (The process is generally the same for both Android devices and iPhones.)

Messenger has end-to-end encryption to keep your chats private.

BeReal is a fun app. But one of its less fun qualities is the element of surprise. You don’t see a preview of yourself while the front-facing camera is shooting, and you don’t know exactly when it’s taking your picture. As a consequence, if you’re in a hurry or otherwise distracted, you may end up posting a photo that you’re unhappy with for the world to see.

Don’t worry: the app doesn’t make it easy, but you can delete BeReals. You can only do it once a day, though — so if you want to make another post, the second one had better be good. Additionally, if you delete a BeReal, you won’t be able to delete the next one you post.

If you’ve thought things through and you’re sure you want to delete your BeReal, here’s how to do it.

HOW TO DELETE A BEREAL ON IOS
Tap the three dots next to your BeReal’s timestamp.
Tap Options.
Tap Delete BeReal.

HOW TO DELETE A BEREAL ON ANDROID
Open the dot menu in the top-right corner of your BeReal.
Tap Delete my BeReal.
Before your BeReal is deleted, the app will remind you that you can only delete your BeReal once per day and that you won’t be able to delete the next one you post. It will also ask you why you want to delete your BeReal and give you some options to choose from. Finally, you’ll have one last option to change your mind before you post.

All this is to say: BeReal really doesn’t want you deleting posts and wants you to think carefully before doing so. There certainly may be legitimate reasons to delete a BeReal, but in general, the purpose of the app is to showcase people’s imperfect lives — and that definitionally involves leaving some imperfect posts up.

You can do it, but you have to jump through some hoops.

Google uses TLS (what is called standard encryption) to keep your emails relatively safe in transit. (The service does also have the more secure S/MIME encryption, but it’s only available for business and educational institutions.) There are, however, other ways you can keep your personal data a little safer, and one is by using Google’s confidential mode.

How to schedule an email in Gmail
Google introduced its confidential mode for Gmail in 2018. The setting allows people to send messages that can expire and prevents recipients from copying their contents, forwarding them to others, or downloading them.

You can use confidential mode on a desktop or through the Gmail app on mobile, though whichever you use, you’ll need to activate confidential mode each time you send a message. Here’s how to do it.
