Nuclear Revolution Money had no name of course. And if it did have a name, it would no longer be money.

What gave money its true meaning was its dark-night namelessness, its breathtaking interchangeability.

The virtual concert and video follow in the footsteps of other in-game performances, most notably those in Fortnite, which has featured the likes of Travis Scott and Ariana Grande. But it’s also part of a slowly burgeoning trend of music merging with virtual worlds. League of Legends developer Riot, for instance, has multiple virtual music projects — including the K-pop quartet K/DA and the hip-hop group True Damage — which releases albums and performs as holograms at live events. Virtual influencer Miquela once debuted a music video at Lollapalooza, and PUBG parent company Krafton has been teasing a virtual human named Ana it hopes to turn into a pop star.

The in-game concert series is still going.

Even Beyoncé is not immune to the cycle of outrage. Though her critically acclaimed latest album, Renaissance, has been out for less than a week, Beyoncé is already making changes to two of her songs after being called out on social media.

The singer got into a beef with Kelis for interpolating a portion of her 2003 hit “Milkshake” in “Energy” without giving her a heads-up. (Kelis is not a credited author on the song.) “I heard about this the same way everyone else did,” Kelis said in an Instagram comment. As of Wednesday, the interpolation had been removed.

In the age of streaming, albums aren’t set in stone.

Bringing Ticketmaster to TikTok makes sense, based solely on how big a role music plays on the app, but it could also indicate broader plans to delve into the industry. Last month, a report from Insider revealed that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, filed a trademark for “TikTok Music.” The filing describes it as a platform that would allow users to purchase, play, share, and download music.

In March 2021, SoundCloud implemented a new payout system that allocates funds paid in by subscribers or advertisers directly to the artists fans choose to stream, instead of pooling subscription and advertising money together, then dividing it based on which artists contributed the most streams, like its competitors Spotify and Apple Music. In July, they adopted a licensing deal with Warner Music Group to share the same royalties system.

In 2017, I moved 8,345 miles from my family — from my pink and green painted childhood bedroom in Dubai to a dorm room at USC. Overnight, my world changed. I went from my parents’ mollycoddled child to an adult that had to do their own laundry. The whiplash was heavy, and images of my old life kept echoing in my head. When I woke up to hear the birds outside my window, I half expected to hear my mom playing her Suprabhatam devotional music, loud enough to shake the floor. I’d remember late mornings in Dubai, listening to the radio after missing the school bus, sleepily ingesting the Bollywood Top 40 my parents had on in the car. After class, heading to cram school, I’d blast Mura Masa loud enough to crush my eardrums. On the way home, the bus driver, Yadav, piped Malayali songs through the school bus speakers.

WhenWhen Stan Smeets posted a video titled “I made a synthesizer that plays plant-based music using microscopes and sensors” to a synthesizer Reddit group, the users thought it was funny that he had stumbled into a meme. “[There’s a] stereotype of synth people loving plants,” one user explained to him.

Stereotype or not, there is a growing community of people who use various sensors connected to plants and mushrooms as inspiration for synthesized music. The results range from scatterings of notes in a strange tempo to fully composed ambient music. Uploaded on Bandcamp, YouTube, and especially TikTok, they can rack up millions of views.
