To be clear, the collection is not the primary cache Nasa wishes to return to Earth; it's more of a "Plan B".

Perseverance retains copies of the Three Forks samples in the caching system inside its belly.

The hope is the rover can directly deliver these rocks - and others yet to be drilled - to the mission that comes to take them home.

But Nasa can't risk the scenario where the rover breaks down with all the rocks stuck inside it.

The platform's 150-200m-thick structure had started to split, with one particular crack - dubbed Chasm One - propagating at a steady pace after decades of dormancy.

This fissure eventually cut through the entire shelf. It was the movement on a spring tide that appeared to provide the final impetus.

Although Halley is sited a good 20km (12 miles) back from the line of rupture, sensors on the ice immediately reported a sudden shift in position.

Subsequent satellite imagery has revealed A81 is about 1,550 sq km - nearly as big as of Greater London and marginally bigger than A74, which calved to the east of Halley in February 2021.

You definitely shouldn't panic but there is a biggish asteroid about to pass by Earth in the coming hours.

About the size of a bus, the space rock, known as 2023 BU, will whip over the southern tip of South America just after midnight GMT.

With a closest expected approach of 3,600km (2,200 miles), it counts as a close shave.

Ms Stevenson, who co-founded Beach Guardian, was in Sennen, hosting a group clearing plastic from the dunes when she found the remains of a skull.

She said: "There have been times before, when I'm exploring hidden coves, or deep, dark caves filled with plastic, that I have worried about finding human remains. But it really wasn't expected on a popular beach like this."

It's a new hydrogen-diesel hybrid engine affectionately known as "baby number two" that could help to decarbonise some of Australia's heaviest industries.

The test rig is large - it has its own room adjoining a lab and looks at first glance like many other large motors, but beneath its metallic skin could lie game-changing technology.

The initial project will be completed by the end of March, and a report of the findings will be published through Natural England.

Mr Jefferies added: "Nobody knows the full extent of them right across the UK - so we are trying to collect them and create this map."

The holloways project is inviting people to share pictures and details of their local ancient paths via twitter using .

Nothing on that scale looks like it is about to happen under the area studied by Upflow, fortunately. But it's thought still to be an excellent laboratory.

Its siting was close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where some of Earth's tectonic plates meet. The nearby continent of Africa would also influence how plumes would flow. The Upflow team hopes to publish its imagery in the next couple of years.

The project is funded by the European Research Council. Co-principal investigator is Prof Miguel Miranda from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

There will be a chance to see all the planets in the solar system in the night sky on Thursday.

Five should be visible with the naked eye, while the two furthest away, Uranus and Neptune, will be better viewed with binoculars.

It will be challenging to see Mercury and Venus in the UK due to their low position in the sky.

Some companies already use tethered robots to investigate pipes that are inaccessible. But most of the network is currently inaccessible without digging. This is where much smaller, artificially intelligent machines come in.

A new generation of underground robotic pipe patrollers is being tested at the Integrated Civil and Infrastructure Research Centre (ICAIR) at the University of Sheffield.

Pipebots are miniature, mobile robots with cameras for eyes and all-terrain legs. They are being developed in collaboration with the water industry to patrol pipes and find cracks and weaknesses before they develop into leaks.

"Companies only respond reactively to faults at the moment, not proactively," explains Prof Kirill Horoshenkov. "We need to have the presence of robots so they can continuously collect data before the onset of faults."

Lori Glaze, the director of planetary science at Nasa, said she was looking forward to the dedicated missions planned for Jupiter's moons. The European Space Agency's Juice probe will leave Earth next year and will focus its attention on Ganymede. Nasa's Clipper satellite will launch in 2024 and will orbit Europa.

They were very worthy targets, Dr Glaze said.

"Galileo Galilei's discovery of these moons in 1610 marked the birth of modern astronomy," she recalled.

"Up to that point, of course, it was assumed that Earth was the centre of the Universe and everything revolved around us. But when he pointed his telescope at Jupiter, what he saw there didn't fit the paradigm."

Dr Glaze and Dr Bolton were discussing the Juno mission at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in Chicago.

Perseverance will place 10 cylinders on the ground at its exploration site in Jezero Crater.

They contain a mix of volcanic and sedimentary rocks that the robot has drilled over the past 15 months.

There'll also be examples of Martian soil and air.

The first finger-sized tube should be in position on Tuesday or Wednesday.
