4 Treat Your Windows

Adding the right window treatment can make all the difference. We're especially into Roman shades with a fun pattern. "It goes against decorating 101, but using small patterns together can be easier on the eye," says interior decorator Kristin Panitch, who designed this dreamy pink cloud of a bedroom.

2 Don't Be Afraid of Black Paint

The soft black paint color in this bedroom makes it feel special and intimate in ways you'd never be able to achieve with a lighter hue (this specific shade is Farrow & Ball Railings). The eclectic furniture lends itself nicely to the darkness, too, adding a more lived in and homey vibe.

$300,000 Homes in Massachusetts, West Virginia and Delaware

Wellfleet, Mass. | $290,000
A one-bedroom, one-bathroom seasonal cottage built in 1950
This small cottage is in a seasonal colony on Cape Cod, open from April 1 to Nov. 30. Many colony residents rent out their cottages, which are especially in demand during the summer months. This house, which has propane heat and a window air-conditioning unit, is being sold furnished.

Shopping and dining are about a five-minute drive, in downtown Wellfleet. Several popular beaches are five to 10 minutes away, including Marconi Beach and Lecount Hollow Beach, on the Atlantic coastline. Provincetown, at the tip of Cape Cod, is a 20-minute drive.

Size: 364 square feet

Price per square foot: $797

Indoors: The cottage is shingled, with a weathered exterior, a popular aesthetic on Cape Cod. Planter boxes with colorful flowers hang under windows framed by green shutters, and a few wood steps lead up to the front door.

The living room has high ceilings with skylights, knotty pine walls and wide pine floorboards. Through a wide doorway on one side of the room is a dining area with a built-in window seat that doubles as a sleeping nook for summer guests. The adjacent kitchen has pine cabinets and open shelving.

The bedroom is off the living room, with floral wallpaper and enough space for a double bed. The bathroom has a stall shower and more knotty pine walls.

Outdoor space: A small garden is at the front of the house, behind a low, white picket fence. Next to it is a patio big enough for a cafe table and chairs. A sandy path leads to Drummer Cove, a saltwater estuary surrounded by a pine forest

$3 Million Homes in California

Pasadena | $2.995 Million
A Mediterranean-style house built in 1923, with three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, on a 0.2-acre lot
Once a winter retreat for wealthy East Coast and Midwest residents looking to escape the cold, Pasadena is one of Southern California’s most architecturally eclectic areas, with Craftsman estates, Spanish Revival bungalows and more modest postwar ranch houses. This home was designed in a romantic Mediterranean style, with a manicured lawn, low hedges and a bubbling stone fountain.

It is about a 10-minute drive from Old Pasadena and closer still to the Huntington Library, with its art galleries and botanical gardens. Studio complexes in Burbank, Universal City and Studio City are within half-hour drives, and downtown Los Angeles is 20 minutes away.

Size: 3,016 square feet

Price per square foot: $993

Indoors: The door that faces the street opens into a private, walled courtyard with an outdoor fireplace and a stone fountain. The door to the house is at the back of a covered patio that runs along the side of the courtyard.

It opens into a foyer with original black-and-white marble checkerboard floors and a powder room next to a staircase with a wrought-iron railing. To the right is a formal living room with French doors that open to the courtyard.

To the left of the foyer is a formal dining room with original walnut detailing, elaborate wainscoting and access to the front courtyard. The adjacent sunroom, which has a graphic black-and-white color scheme, opens to the pool area.

The dining room is connected to a kitchen that has stainless-steel appliances from Viking and Sub-Zero, a pair of ceiling fans and an adjoining eating area. A laundry room is off the kitchen.

All three bedrooms are on the second floor. The primary suite includes a walk-in closet in what was once a sleeping porch and a dramatic black-and-white bathroom with two porcelain pedestal sinks and a combined shower and tub.

The Effortless Way to Style a Coffee Table

A coffee table isn’t just a place for your guests to set down their drinks.

“The coffee table is often the centerpiece of the room,” said Dan Mazzarini, a partner at the New York-based interior design and styling firm BHDM. It will attract attention whether you want it to or not. So don’t overlook its decorative potential.

“In the same way that walls feel empty without art, coffee tables feel empty without anything on them,” said Anna Baraness, a founder of Studio AK, an interior design firm in New York. “When you walk into a home with a nicely styled coffee table, it feels complete and really works as part of the bigger picture.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean that cluttered is better than bare. Your coffee table shouldn’t be a dumping ground for remote controls, mail and anything else that doesn’t have a home. Interior designers and home stagers manage to strike a balance between decoration and function, styling coffee tables in a way that feels almost effortless. How exactly do they do it? We asked for some advice.

Why the tiny house is perfect for now

Just as minimalism found its moment, now it's the turn of the tiny house movement. Beverley D'Silva explores why, when it comes to dwellings, small is beautiful.

In the world of home design, a revolution is taking place – and its future is tiny. The buzz around the tiny house trend – an architectural and social movement that advocates for downsizing living spaces – is increasing. Witness the nearly 2.5 million Instagram posts with a "tinyhouse" hashtag; a massive internet following and burgeoning number of documentaries and TV series, such as the Netflix show Tiny House Nation, and a series on the subject by UK architect and TV presenter George Clarke.More like
One of the most high-profile of the movement's many champions must be Elon Musk, the multibillionaire Tesla chief. Musk upped the tiny-house ante when he rented one in Boca Chica, Texas, while working on his SpaceX venture. "Feels more homey to live in a small house," he tweeted.

In the same way that minimalism and decluttering captured the zeitgeist as a counterpoint to conspicuous consumerism, so too has the tiny house movement found its moment. The idea – that having less space and stuff can create room in our lives for more important things – is an appealing one.
