The artist inspects his latest commission, a hybrid Indian-Polish-themed mouse with features from Maratha armor and the distinctive wings of the Polish Hussars, which took some 200 hours to create.

When I met Grégoire Gachet (no relation to Vincent Gachet), one of the newest tavillonneurs, he was at his home studio outside Charmey making tavillons. He explained that many of the trees used – usually red or white spruce or fir, which are plentiful in the region – come from the Jura mountains on the border of France and Switzerland. The master craftsmen make their choices based on where the trees are growing. The elevation here, typically between 1,000m and 1,600m, and placement of the towering trees are significant because the climate impacts the integrity of the wood. At this altitude, the trees grow more slowly, and those from a quiet forest void of forceful winds are considered best.

“By itself, raw dulse can overpower you, but milled and mixed, it gives butter a lovely, natural saltiness,” Allison said. “It’s just something we tried that took off for us,” Will added, spreading dulse butter on a warm scone. “I never got to meet royalty when I was just herding sheep.”

Among the developments already made in service of this goal, she told me, are the "identification of major greenhouse-gas emission sources and reduction measures... energy efficiency in the buildings, electric vehicles, efficient and low-carbon management of the water supply, and recycling of waste and water."

But things changed drastically in 1986 when a massive storm hit Titicaca. "They told us it was because that's when Haley's Comet passed. The same way the Earth opens during an earthquake, our islands broke open during the storm," Lujano said. "The adults put all of the kids on one of the totora boats to protect us. The wind from the north was so strong that it took whole islands, and even our school, to the Bolivian side of the lake. We lost those islands for good."

Our oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, but over 80% of them remain unexplored. In fact, it is often claimed that we know more about the surface of Mars and the Moon than about the ocean floor on our own planet.

Often, these artists appear intensely present within the works – such as British-Liberian artist Lina Iris Viktor, whose confrontational, intricate and alluring self-portrait series (including a new triptych) and sculptures summon her own atmospheric realm In the Black Fantastic.

Water is everywhere in Granada's ornate and lavish Alhambra, a 13th-Century palatial complex that's one of the world's most iconic examples of Moorish architecture. It flows in channels that cool the buildings; spurts from fountains in grand rooms and charming courtyards; and sprays in such a way that, from certain angles, it perfectly frames majestic arched doorways. The same intricate system brings colour to the famed gardens of the Generalife, the former summer palace next door.
