It was easy to laugh yesterday when Apple revealed that you’ll soon be able to stick an iPhone on the back of your Mac to get a better we**am. Some joked that Apple design legend Jony Ive was off crying somewhere. Others wondered whether this was truly the best Apple could come up with after years of grainy MacBook images and how the Apple Studio Display’s camera fell short.

Everything we just learned about Continuity Camera.

When it comes to taking photographs, the range of interest and knowledge among practitioners — and the range of the equipment they use — can be immense. You can be happy just taking the occasional snapshot with your phone; you can own a reasonably priced camera and a couple of decent lenses; you can save up your salary for your dream camera along with some really good lenses, straps, and tripods; or you can be a pro whose expertise demands a major investment in top-line equipment.

Photography gadgetry from lenses to tripods and bags.

Insta360 has announced its most expensive and powerful consumer 360 camera to date, the $800 One RS 1-inch 360 Edition. The complicated name is due to the fact that the core of this camera is the same as the core in Insta360’s ONE RS, the second edition of the company’s modular action camera that launched in April of this year. But the 1-inch 360 edition adds a larger battery attachment and dual 1-inch CMOS sensors mod. All of this is held together by a mounting bracket to create a far more capable 6K 360 camera.

Insta360’s new $800 One RS 1-inch 360 Edition captures 6K 360 video and 21MP photos.

If you don’t want to actually purchase a we**am, though, there are several routes to take. You can get crafty with your phone (and spend hardly anything or nothing at all) by using an app that’ll fool your computer into thinking it’s a we**am. Or you can go in the total opposite direction and connect a pricey DSLR or mirrorless camera to your computer to use as a we**am — a very good one, at that.

If you don’t have a we**am, or if your laptop isn’t cutting it.

If you’ve recently managed to secure a PlayStation 5, you can enjoy your new console while saving on a number of titles thanks to Sony’s Summer Sale promotion in the PlayStation Store, which lasts until August 3rd. Some highlights from the sale include PS5 and PS4 deals on the new teen-horror game The Quarry and martial arts title Sifu, both of which we don’t often see discounts on. PS4 owners can pick up the standard edition of The Quarry for $40.19 ($19.80 off), while the PS5 version is on sale for $46.89 ($23.10 off). In addition, both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Sifu, a challenging kung fu game wherein you must eliminate the martial arts masters who killed your father, are on sale for $31.99 instead of $39.99. Read our Sifu review.

Though Netflix only just announced that Squid Game will return for a second season, today the streamer shared its plans to expand the Battle Royale-esque franchise with a real-world game show inspired by the fictional competition at the center of the original series. Like Squid Game, Squid Game: The Challenge (not to be confused with MTV’s The Challenge) will pit 456 players from across the globe against one another as they fight for a $4.56 million prize that only one participant can ultimately claim.

Though Netflix has released a promotional video featuring scenes from the fictional Squid Game, it has not yet specified what sorts of obstacles Squid Game: The Challenge will throw at contestants. In a public statement about the new game show, Netflix vice president of unscripted and documentary series Brandon Riegg sang Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s praises and cited the series’ worldwide success as some of the reasoning behind Netflix’s decision to turn it into a show the public can participate in.

The casting call is now open for Squid Game: The Challenge.

BTS fans have quite a lot of content to look out for on Disney Plus. The streaming service has announced a collaboration with Hybe, BTS’s label, to bring what Disney describes as “five major content titles” to the platform. At least three of those titles are confirmed to feature BTS in some form.

The two exclusive projects include BTS: Permission to Dance On Stage — LA, a 4K film of the band’s live performance at Sofi Stadium last November, and BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star, a docuseries about the band that’s said to feature “unprecedented access to a vast library of music and footage over the past nine years.”

Also coming to Disney Plus is In The Soop: Friendcation, a travel reality show starring BTS member V and other entertainers, including Parasite’s Choi Wooshik, with whom the singer is famously close. The program will showcase the group “venturing on a surprise trip and enjoying a variety of leisure and fun activities,” per Disney. The title appears to be a spinoff of BTS In the Soop, a two-season reality show that followed BTS on remote vacations. (“Soop” is a play on 숲, the Korean word for “forest.”)

Exclusive content from the band is coming soon.

HBO has released the first teaser trailer for The Idol, a new show co-created by Sam Levinson, creator and primary director of Euphoria, as well as Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd. A sleazy love story set in Hollywood.

Paper Girls started life as a 30-issue comic from Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang that followed four newspaper delivery girls who get sucked into a long-running war between various time-traveling groups. It has lots of classic ‘80s adventure movie elements — like kids riding all over town on bikes — before getting going in its own direction to become extremely weird and interesting.

The series, meanwhile, stars Sofia Rosinsky, Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, and Fina Strazza as the four main girls, while Ali Wong has been cast as the older version of Erin Tieng. Here’s the premise for the show, via Amazon:

It’s the day after Halloween in 1988 when four young friends accidentally stumble into an intense time war and find themselves inexplicably transported to the year 2019. When they come face-to-face with their adult selves, each girl discovers her own strengths as together they try to find a way back to the past while saving the world of the future.

More ‘80s-themed action.

Though Baba Voss (Jason Momoa) and Queen Maghra (Hera Hilmar) were able to triumph over Baba’s brother Edo (Dave Bautista) in See’s second season finale, the war between the Trivantians and the monarchy ended with an ideological divide threatening to upend the new balance of power. After years of operating as witch hunters — killers of people like Baba and Maghra’s twin daughter Haniwa (Nesta Cooper) and son Kofun (Archie Madekwe) born with the ability to see — many of those loyal to the throne balk at Maghra’s decision to eradicate the practice.

Baba Voss returns in the first trailer for See’s third and final season

The unexpected return of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in Hawkeye and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home were both highlights in their respective stories that made clear Marvel’s plan to work those characters back into the MCU post-Netflix. While a new Daredevil series is in the works, it turns out that Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk will actually be making their next appearance in Disney Plus’ upcoming Echo show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Cox and D’Onofrio have signed on to reprise their roles as crime-fighting lawyer Matt Murdock / Daredevil and brutal crime lord Wilson Fisk / Kingpin for Echo, the Hawkeye spinoff centering Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox). Hawkeye’s final few episodes gradually revealed that in addition to working with Maya, Fisk had also come to see her as a kind of daughter figure, making his return in a story focused on her life unsurprising. Wherever Fisk goes, Murdock’s never all that far away. But Maya’s relatively heroic turn toward the end of Hawkeye could point to Echo being more about how encounters with Defenders like Daredevil help solidify her new worldview and further develop her special abilities.

The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen and the Kingpin are back.
