LILLY SINGH
Subscribes to Herself
By Jason Pham
THIRTY DAYS
before her 30th birthday, Lilly Singh made a promise to herself. It was a late night in October 2018, and she was contemplating her sexuality, a topic she had thought more and more about ever since she moved from Toronto to Los Angeles in 2015 and was introduced to the idea that q***rness wasn’t just gay or straight, but a spectrum. “I just said out loud, ‘I think you’re into girls and guys. I think you’re bisexual,’” Singh, now 33, recalls over a Zoom call from her office in L.A. on a sunny Monday in March. “It was the first time I said it aloud. I started crying. It instantly felt right.”

"I want a little girl to watch me and be like, ‘That’s a brown girl.’”

Our Moms make us who we are. From the moment they become moms, they shape our whole worlds and put endless effort into making sure we have the best shot at becoming the people we were meant to be.

Moms always know best.

ly and AJ are parked outside their recording studio in Los Angeles, joining a video call from their car as early afternoon sunlight spills across the dashboard. Aly—the older half of the eponymous musical duo she helms with her sister AJ—is fresh-faced and freckled, her tousled hair peeking over a relaxed white tee. She looks over often at AJ, who sits in the driver’s seat and sports an ocean blue sweater with a daisy stitched into its center. Birds are, quite literally, chirping in the distance.

"There’s a freedom to just following your gut. It’s just that now, we’re allowed it more so than ever."

CHRISHELL STAUSE
has thoughts. It’s a brisk February morning in New York, and Stause, 40, is discussing her next look for her cover shoot, which she’s already joked about using for her dating app photos. “I’m selling a lot,” she says, wearing a red latex skirt set with a matching thong peeking out above her hip. “And also sunset.” It’s the day after the release of her memoir, “Under Construction: Because Living My Best Life Took a Little Work,” and Stause, whose signature dark golden blonde hair is slicked back behind her ears, is in the midst of a nationwide book tour. Her next stop is a book signing at the
Mall of America in Minnesota before she returns to Los Angeles for a
final stop at The Grove.

"The world had shut down. My world had blown up. I braced for public humiliation."

Makes a Name For Herself

he silver elevator doors open and Auli’i Cravalho walks through. It’s an early morning in April and Cravalho is at her Pride cover shoot, her last stop on a week-long press tour in New York City for “Crush,” Hulu’s q***r romantic comedy about two high school rivals who fall for each other. After the shoot—for which she cut two nails short on her right hand in honor of the LGBTQ+ community (“This is for the gays.”)—Cravalho has an immediate six-hour flight back home to Los Angeles. She’s dressed comfortably for the occasion: a gray oversized hoodie, matching sweatpants and a pair of fuzzy boots someone mistakes for Uggs. “These are mukluks. They’re indigenous Uggs,” she corrects them. “They’re waterproof. Uggs could never.”

"Our names are our identity."
