Known as the Black Pearl, Atlantic Beach is one of the few Black-owned beaches that remain in the U.S. For more than three decades, this town spanning just four blocks was a bustling vacation spot for Black beach-goers living in the segregated South. In the early 1930s, Black entrepreneurs and families ran hotels, restaurants, and shops here. But while the town boomed in the 1940s and ’50s, it declined after segregation as Black tourists left to explore other vacation spots. These days, residents—many who are descendants of the Gullah Geechee, former enslaved people from the west coast of Africa—are working to preserve the town’s history. You can visit historic sites in the area, mostly at nearby Myrtle Beach.

Every six months, once in March and again in September, an equinox splits Earth’s day almost in half, giving us about 12 hours of daylight and 12 of night.

On September 23, 2023, the autumnal equinox will signal the coming of fall for the Northern Hemisphere. Then, in March, nature will once again bring us the vernal equinox, the time of year that ushers in spring in the North. Those dates are swapped for the vernal and autumnal equinoxes in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ryuto Shinko Co, Ltd became Japan's first geigi recruitment company, aiming not just to train new geigi but also to act as intermediaries, connecting them with ryotei and other establishments. Backed by sponsorship from 80 local businesses, Ryuto Shinko contracts geigis as full-time salaried workers, providing health care and other benefits. They also hope to raise awareness and boost tourism via merchandise like T-shirts, calendars, fans and even sake bearing images of Furumachi Geigi.
