At 8:52 a.m. local time today, a mini fridge-size capsule carrying rock samples from the asteroid Bennu parachuted down at the United States Army’s Utah Test and Training Range, about 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The capsule had been in space for 2,572 days, and its return marks the conclusion of the first U.S. asteroid sample-return mission: OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer).

Hofmann described his trippy trip home with an exactness of scientific observation that contrasts with the psychological wildness of the experience. “Kaleidoscopic, fantastic images surged in on me, alternating, variegated, opening and then closing themselves in circles and spirals, exploding in coloured fountains, rearranging and hybridizing themselves in constant flux,” he wrote in his book L*D – My Problem Child. “Every acoustic perception, such as the sound of a door handle or a passing automobile, became transformed into optical perceptions. Every sound generated a vividly changing image, with its own consistent form and colour.”

The Lycopodina hypogea, a carnivorous sponge, is a rare find. If the name makes one shudder, its appearance brings a smile: It looks like a harmless miniature swab. But its hooks can take hold of small crustaceans that pass by too close; the sponge’s tissues then grow around the prey until it’s engulfed in its flesh. There is no lightning attack, no violent fight—just the slow assimilation of one being by another over a few days.
