Fall in love with the world – every day
About BBC Travel
B
BBC Travel tells awe-inspiring, immersive travel stories to curious, passionate readers who want to learn about the world as much as they want to travel there. We are fuelled by new, unexpected and emotionally engaging stories from a global community of editors, writers, photographers and video journalists who provide a trusted perspective on the world of travel. We are independent, impartial and honest.

In a complex world of negative news and xenophobia at one extreme, and top 10 lists and substance-less roundups at the other, we’ve lost the experience and sheer joy of travel. BBC Travel aims to provide an antidote by celebrating the people, places and cultures that make this world so wonderfully diverse and amazing.

To do this, we tell stories with unexpected angles – on themes such as culture, food, discovery and adventure – that haven’t been covered before. Not only do we teach our readers something new, we change their perceptions about places and people. Through our travel stories, we connect readers to cultures around the world, and appeal to people who aren’t travelling at the moment as much as those who are. We encourage responsible travel and tell stories with cultural sensitivity and sustainability in mind, from diverse perspectives.

A 'blue hole' to the Northern Lights
A little-known meteorological phenomenon makes a tiny village in Arctic Sweden one of the best places on Earth to consistently see the Aurora Borealis.
"I'm not so sure we'll see them," said my photographer colleague Erik Jaråker, as he looked at the fog all around. I was driving us up the single-lane highway towards one of Sweden's northernmost villages, Abisko, located 250km north of the Arctic Circle. We were caught in the middle of a snowstorm with zero visibility, and all around us, the mountains of Abisko National Park had become a sea of white.

We were heading up to photograph the elusive Northern Lights – nature's spectacular light show, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The displays occur when explosions on the sun's surface, called solar flares, collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere to create shimmering bands of red, green and purple. To witness this Aurora activity, we needed frigid, clear, cloudless skies, not the winter storm we were currently slogging through.

Bob Marley's Exodus: An album that defined the 20th Century
Bob Marley's album Exodus was released 45 years ago. As a new exhibition about the reggae star opens in London, Arwa Haider explores how his music reverberated around the world.
I
In the first room of the new Bob Marley One Love Experience at London's Saatchi Gallery, you're immediately hit by the Jamaican reggae megastar's extraordinary recording catalogue with his band, The Wailers. Along the wall displays, one particular golden record sleeve radiates its own regal presence: the pivotal 10th album Exodus (1977), created while Marley and his bandmates were living a short walk away from this Chelsea venue. Now in its 45th year, it's a work of powerful transition: arguably confirming Marley's true global status, and continually connecting with new generations of listeners.

The spirit of Exodus is multi-layered; its title track evokes the Old Testament tale of Moses leading his people to safety, and its parallels with Marley's Rastafarian faith. It also reflects Marley's own flight to London, amid the brutal turbulence of Jamaica's elections, and in the wake of a December 1976 assassination attempt that wounded him and his wife, vocalist Rita Marley. He would spend more than a year in the UK capital, during which Exodus (and its relatively breezy 1978 follow-up Kaya) were created.

Inside the homes of remarkable artists and writers
What do these intriguing interiors tell us about their creative occupants? Andrea Marechal Watson finds some answers in a new book, Life Meets Art.
I
If our homes reflect our characters, then the home of an artist is likely to be particularly intriguing. A new book, Life Meets Art: Inside the Homes of the World’s Most Creative People, opens the doors to a collection of interiors that have all at some point belonged to famous artists, sculptors, musicians or writers.

Working his way around the world, author Sam Lubell chose 250 of the most photogenic and memorable residences he found. Some are now museums containing works by the artists who lived and often worked in them; others can best be described as shrines.
