October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
4 out of 5 Indigenous women experience domestic abuse. Those 4 women are a lot closer to you than you think. So many of our men call themselves warriors, but when it comes to protecting our women and children, they remain silent. They watch abusers continue to hurt people and choose not to hold them accountable.
So many call themselves strong traditionalists, yet somehow forget that protecting women and children is traditional too. We come from matriarchal nations. Every one of these men was given life by a WOMAN. They have mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, daughters and friends who could one day experience abuse if they haven’t already. IT IS traditional to protect our women and children. IT IS traditional to speak up for them. IT IS traditional to hold abusers accountable. Stop teaching our children that this is what love looks like. Stop teaching them that it’s okay to stay in situations where they are being hurt. Stop teaching them that silence is acceptable when someone else is being abused. Teach them that love is safe and respect is non-negotiable. Teach them to speak up and protect one another. Our women and children deserve.
