Repair ~ That part of the Business has "passed on"... This Repair Shop is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet it's maker! It's a stiff! Bereft of life, It rests in peace! If it were a mortal being it'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now History! It's off the twig! It's kicked the bucket, It's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-Shoe Repair !!

Most of you who know me know that I am anxious to retire. It is what I have been aiming to do all along. My life in Shoe Repair was a career path that I had never intended. I have often stated that I won't miss it.
That being said - moments like this - this afternoon, might give me pause... I find myself humbled and honored for this Citation coming from Ohio State Senator Vernon Sykes. Publicly I thank him for this and his ( and his daughter Emilia Sykes' ) patronage over the years.

To clarify a misconception many have mistaken given the recent Beacon Journal story about my impending retirement - Dec. 1st will be the date the spot will be available to the next tenant - This means the entire month of November will be a cleaning out - removing machinery month. October will be a month dedicated for folks to claim items still left in the shop. * Any items unreclaimed will be thrown away. Sometime mid September will be where ALL new or incoming repair work will be halted.

By Thanksgiving I will be closing the Highland Shoe Repair permanently.
The current state of the shoes manufactured these days and for the foreseeable future leave little prospect of Repair Shops to ply their once useful trade.
This comes as no surprise to me - I've seen this coming for a long time There are other reasons, but it boils down to this : For me - it's time.
Recently customers who I have informed of this decision have remarked " I'm going home to clean out my closet to repair all of my shoes before then ! "

This is not as complementary as it sounds. In fact - it's slightly disturbing to imagine an onslaught or repairs stampeding in - as I am about to wind down.
Such a myopic knee-jerk response to the news would create a business nightmare stock-wise. Individuals might create an unnecessary logjam that could possibly prevent many others from receiving individual repairs - by a somewhat selfish competition for scarce resources.
One of the reasons I maintain a strict Ticket Return policy - is to insure the best use of my productivity in a one man shop. Numerous time-outs to search for shoes takes time away from the repair work of other customers. This is not a lack of Customer Service - It is in fact, Spock Logic : " The needs of the Many outweigh the needs of the Few.. or the One ".
My job as I see it - is to limit the inconvenience to the individual who brought it unto themselves by denying us both a quick and simple process to identify the location of their bagged repair among a multitude of repairs in the shop at any given time.

To that end - from this time forward -I reserve the Right to impose a 4 Pair Maximum of repair per customer ~ To insure that no single customer can monopolize time or resources from others during the business days remaining.
This should allow anyone with more than 4 pair or items needing repair - ample chance for multiple return visits ( if necessary ) without denying repair access to others.
