Pink Peruvian opal pillow tiles and black onyx. This hand knotted necklace is 27 inches long, finished with a lobster-claw clasp.

The beads are from Bead Inspirations (https://www.beadinspirations.com), my local bead purveyor.

Both Opal and Onyx are part of the silicon-dioxide mineral family (SIO2 + (H2O)x).

Depending on the amount of water included in the matrix, the crystallographic structure, and the additional ions incorporated in the crystal, Opal ranges from opaque to almost transparent. It can be colored white, black, green, pink, brown, or combinations of all of these. Opals can also exhibit ‘fire’ in addition to color (opalescence), if the crystal structure allows for internal reflection and refraction of light.

Onyx, similarly can be black, green, yellow, red, orange, black & white striped (called sardonyx, historically; now called Zebra Agate), etc. Onyx does not exhibit opalescence.

Agate and Onyx are distinguished by the color banding; agate has curved bands, Onyx has parallel bands. Both are members of the chalcedony group of silicate minerals.

This necklace is made of faceted sodalite tubular beads with Baroque fresh-water pearls. The necklace is hand knotted, 28 inches long, with a bit of gold chain and a lobster-claw clasp.

The necklace comes with a matching set of earrings. (Or, as my Grandmother used to say “ear-bobs”. To her, only hoops were earrings, everything else were ear-bobs.)

Triangular Tibetan Inlayed Beads, Brass and Turquoise, and Cultured-Fresh Water

This is a necklace and earrings set.

The brass and turquoise beads were made in Tibet, the brass beads are triangular in cross-section and have turquoise chips inlayed on all three sides. These beads along with 8mm cultured pearls make up a 21 inch hand-knotted necklace. The lobster-claw clasp and the ear-wires are all gold plated.

The turquoise chips in the inlay are Asian Turquoise which is somewhat greener than American Turquoise.

All of these beads are from my local bead store, Bead Inspirations (https://www.beadinspirations.com); they were bought by the store-owner at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show earlier this year.

This 29 inch, hand-knotted, necklace is made of Kyanite tiles and fresh-water pearls, finished with a silver-plated lobster-claw clasp. The necklace comes with matching earrings.

Kyanite is a blue alumino-silicate mineral formed in deep-Earth metamorphosis of aluminum rich minerals such as andalusite. The name, from Greek “kyanos”, refering to the characteristic blue color.

Green enamel cloisonne on gold beads teamed with Baroque fresh-water pearls and gold heishi accents. This necklace is 27 inches long and finished with a gold lobster-claw clasp.

The cloisonne beads came from Bead Inspirations (https://www.beadinspirations.com), and the pearls are from my bead stash.

This is another necklace set with a Renaissance feel to it. It is the kind of jewelry that Contessina di Bardi, Cosimo de’ Medici’s wife, might have worn during 1400’s in Florence.

Here is the latest addition to my shop: Aquamarine and Tiger Ebony Squares

A Hand-knotted necklace, 23 inches long, with a lobster-claw clasp. The beads are Madagascar tiger-ebony and 6 mm aquamarine, both from Bead Inspirations (https://www.beadinspirations.com).

Ebony, it turns out. is an entire family of Asian and African trees. The wood comes in various shades of black, gray, brown, tan and khaki. Tiger Ebony is medium brown to light tan with darker brown stripes.
