Handmade with love is such a small phrase when I consider where these dolls started. I sell them here and there around Albuquerque and have met many of you at random venues where I was vending! Vending is one of my favorite things to do and when I think about how many wonderful people I have become friends with over the years it’s SO easy to see why.
I added these dolls to my product list a couple of years ago now and I am so so proud of the direction this product has taken. They have grown and developed over time to be these yarn hair cuties that I’m creating now.
I started making them originally for Sawyer to use in his many hours of therapy. He called the dolls his kids and he loved to use them during his play therapy as a social buffer. The first doll I ever gave him was named Chinese Food Restaurant (such a funny name for a doll! 😆) and even after two years, it is still one of his favorite things. He is the reason that I called the dolls Sawyers kids. He is the reason that each and every doll has always and will always include the autism puzzle piece somewhere in its scrap pieced body. The product itself will always change and improve over time, but the autism puzzle piece will remain. I would hope to use any platform I find myself on as a place to impart with knowledge I have built over the years. ESPECIALLY when discussing things that are stigmatized and difficult to navigate. When it comes to autism I have learned to be an advocate and somehow, along the way, I’ve found myself navigating this subject with the confidence and ease of a seasoned vet. If it’s possible for any of that knowledge to benefit another person, and a doll sparks that conversation I will make ten thousand dolls.
When I’m looking for fabrics to combine to make these little Ladies (and YES sometimes I make little boy dolls too!) my absolute favorite thing to come across is the scrap material left over from other local crafters, vendors, and artists projects. I take what would be of no use to them and potentially would wind up in a landfill and piece it all together to create these lovable dolls. These little ladies are artfully crafted and can be displayed as an Art Deco Doll, preserved as a keepsake doll, or even played with everyday.
I have heard from many parents that the dolls are durable and can withstand daily play as a favored or treasured toy. It is ALWAYS my hope that the dolls I create are going to become someone’s best friend. This is why I include a small plastic sleeve at the bottom of each and every doll! I know how terrible it is when a child’s favorite toy becomes misplaced and for this reason I included this secret little sleeve to hold a phone number to help make sure that lost dolls could find their way home.
These dolls are my absolute favorite thing that I have ever created and developed over the years. They are all so unique and lovable that sometimes I have a HARD time giving them up but I always love that they are being adopted and will be cherished no matter what.
I try to post new dolls every week and have some coming up to you this Wednesday!! Most of the dolls in these photos are SOLD already but if you feel inspired to make a special request there is only a small upcharge for special requests, novelty, and copyright fabrics or themes.
