Fabric for the Rivermont dress! This is a Double Knit Ponte. It's almost like a sweater knit, but with a bit more body. I like how sweater dresses look, but not the way they tend to cling and sag with their own weight.

My background is in theatrical costume design. This is a dress I designed and made for the leading lady in the opera L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) preformed by the Lyric Opera of the North in Duluth, MN. It was so much fun to do! The dress is based on garments from the 1830’s which is one of those periods that’s just weird, flouncy and the bigger the sleeves the better.

The process for making a costume is not to different from sewing actual clothing- I draped and made a pattern for the bodice, made a mock up, had a fitting and moved into the fashion fabric. Theatre has it’s own needs- this dress has hidden guests in the sleeves (So the singer can move her arms more easily) as well as a hidden zipper up the back- a period correct dress would have been laced up. I do like putting historical details in if I can, but the needs of the show often take precedence.

The final dress! Finishing can take forever- it is one of those things that is easy to underestimate time for! But they are details that are so worth it in the end. The hems and getting everything to hang just right, a hidden loop for lifting the train, to the 100 plus buttons down the back!

It was so much fun to make this gown. I’m so happy that I got to be a part of Sarah’s wedding day. Of course, the best part was how happy and beautiful Sarah looked.

Time for the mockup! I draped the bodice myself, but for the skirt, chose to alter a commercial pattern I already had. This saved some time for me and paper! The mockup or muslin is made from an inexpensive lace and poly charmeuse that had a similar hand and drape to the lace and silk fabrics we purchased for the real thing.

The final design was worked out over lunch, and another long conversation. Fabric shopping came next and is once of my favorite parts. I don't have any photos from that day. We ordered the silk chiffon and organza and found a beautiful lace in Rochester, MN, after much debate!
