Before vacuum cleaners became common household appliances, carpets were cleaned with brooms, brushes, and a whole lot of elbow grease.

Dusting wasn't a quick task either. Coal furnaces, wood stoves, and less efficient heating systems created far more dust and soot than most homes experience today.

The vacuum cleaner was considered a luxury when it first arrived in homes.

Today, many of us can vacuum an entire level of our home in under 15 minutes.

Technology has made cleaning faster.

But somehow, we still feel like we have less time.

Why?

Because while cleaning got easier, life got busier.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the average homemaker spent around 32 hours each week on household tasks like cleaning, cooking, laundry, and dishes.

Many homes operated on a carefully planned routine:
