I’ve been reading a book recently on childhood development, and today, a few things hit me so hard they brought me to tears…
Earlier, I was sitting on the floor playing tea party with my daughter. I looked at her and thought, “Oh my goodness, this is so cute. I need a picture!” 📸
So I stopped stirring my imaginary tea and snapped a picture of our simple little setup.
Not even an hour later, I was back to reading…and I genuinely think God knew when I picked up this book that it would be exactly what I needed in this season.
As I read about adventure, boredom, childhood development, and recent psychological studies, the author brought up something that stopped me:
How often do we feel like we have to document a moment instead of simply living in it?
And even more convicting, how many times do our children look up at us throughout the day, searching for a tiny moment of connection, only to find us looking down at our phones?
Oof. 😭
As someone whose job revolves around digital media and advertising, who loves researching psychology and development, and who is actively attending college… this one got me.
Because if I’m being honest, I know this is an area God has been calling me to work on.
And I haven’t always done a fantastic job.
(For the record, my children are napping or having quiet time while I write this. 😂)
But maybe someone else needs the reminder I needed today:
Yes, there are only so many hours in a day…and a million things constantly asking for our attention….
But there are also only so many years we get with our children while they are children.
And one day, there won’t be an imaginary cup of tea waiting for me on the floor. 😭
The more I learn about childhood development, the more I realize how much I still have to learn.
I know I’ll get things wrong. I already have.
But I hope one day my children look back and know that even when I failed, I never stopped learning, growing, or asking God to make me better.
And most importantly, I hope they remember that I put the phone down…
and drank the imaginary tea. 🤎
