Join UMass Amherst MA/PhD student Miranda Lutyens tonight for the final installment of our Summer Seminar Series at UMass Downtown as she explores how private freewriting can support college students' wellbeing and relationship to writing.

In "Private Freewriting In and Beyond the Classroom: What Unedited, Unsurveilled Writing Does for College Students and Their Wellbeing," Miranda will share how a simple practice of writing by hand for ten uninterrupted minutes can encourage reflection, strengthen connections to writing, and support students' relationships with themselves and others.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday for our Summer Send-Off Carnival and the final Fun Saturday Morning of the season at UMass Downtown!

Families enjoyed a morning filled with games, treats, and creativity while revisiting some of their favorite crafts from throughout the summer. It was a wonderful way to celebrate an incredible season together.

A special thank you to our partners at Amherst Recreation for helping make the morning such a fun and memorable event.

We also want to thank every family who joined us throughout the summer. It was a joy to see so many familiar and new faces each week, and we hope these Saturday mornings created lasting memories for your families.

Join UMass Amherst graduate student Kathleen Mahoney tonight for the next installment of our Summer Seminar Series at UMass Downtown as she explores how outdoor play can create meaningful opportunities for young children to engage with science.

In “Playing is Naturally Scientific: A Case Study of Outdoor Play-Based Science Experiences in Early Childhood Education,” Kathleen will share how early childhood educators support science learning through outdoor play and how those experiences connect with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Learn how play, scientific inquiry, and concept development can come together to support young children’s learning.

This week, we’re getting creative with Paint & Plant! Families are invited to decorate their own flowerpot, then plant something to take home and watch grow!

It’s a fun, hands-on way for kids to get creative while learning a little about planting and growing along the way.

Join UMass Amherst Ph.D. candidate Alex Wilk tongiht for the next installment of our Summer Seminar Series at UMass Downtown as he explores how ancient lake sediments can help us better understand the future of our changing climate.

In “Tackling Climate Change in the East African Tropics: Using Ancient Mud to Predict the Future,” Alex will share how scientists are studying chemical clues preserved in the bottom of Lake Malawi to reconstruct past climate conditions and improve predictions for the future. Learn how this research is helping communities prepare for the impacts of climate change in Tropical East Africa and beyond.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday for another Fun Saturday Morning at UMass Downtown!

Families spent the morning designing and building their own shoebox foosball games. It was wonderful to see so many unique creations come to life, and even more fun watching everyone put their games to the test!

A special thank you to the coach and student-athletes of the UMass Women’s Soccer Team who joined us to help families with the activity while celebrating the excitement of the World Cup Final.

We appreciate everyone who came out and made it such a fun morning. We hope to see you again this Saturday for our next activity!

⚽ The World Cup Final is almost here—and we’re celebrating with soccer-themed fun at UMass Downtown!

Join us this Saturday, July 18, from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM for the next installment of Fun Saturday Mornings as we create our own Shoebox Stadiums! Children and families will build a miniature foosball-style game, decorate it, and take home a fun activity they can enjoy all summer long.

We’re also excited to welcome student-athletes from the UMass Women’s Soccer team, who will be joining us to craft, meet families, and help celebrate one of the biggest weekends in the soccer world.

We hope to see you there for a morning of creativity, community, and a little World Cup excitement!

Ruth will discuss research on building systems of care that better support pregnant and postpartum individuals, while Jeng-Yu will examine how artificial intelligence and public policy can work together to create safer digital spaces.
