John R. Swanton was a prominent American ethnologist and linguist who conducted extensive fieldwork among Native American tribes, particularly in the southeastern United States and the Pacific Northwest. His work with the Haida people, documented in "Haida Texts and Myths, Skidegate Dialect," is a foundational contribution to the study of their language and oral traditions. This publication is part of the Bureau of American Ethnology's efforts to document indigenous cultures before they were significantly impacted by assimilation and modernization.

The Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology, established in 1879, was dedicated to the scientific study of Native American peoples. Bulletin No. 29, as indicated on the title page, represents a significant output from this bureau, aiming to preserve linguistic and cultural records. The "Skidegate dialect" specifically refers to a variant of the Haida language spoken by the Haida people of the Skidegate Inlet region on the Queen Charlotte Islands, now Haida Gwaii, in British Columbia, Canada.
