Jacqueline Kennedy’s iconic wedding dress was designed by African American couturier Ann Lowe, a prominent designer for elite families, though Lowe wasn’t publicly credited at the time due to racial bias, with Kennedy attributing it to “a colored woman”.

Days before the wedding, a pipe burst and flooded Lowe’s shop ruining the wedding and bridesmaid dresses. Lowe and her team worked overtime to make new dresses according to the original designs, absorbing significant financial loss to ensure the event went ahead. 

On September 12, 1953, Lowe arrived in Newport, Rhode Island to hand-deliver the gowns to the bridal party. And when staff at the front door told her to enter through the back, she firmly replied, “I’ll take the dresses back [to New York]” if she had to go through the back door and marched through the front door instead.
