Hats, hats, come get your hats!

Even though they are called “Panama Hats” here in the States, they have always been produced in Ecuador, woven by hand using Paja Toquilla which is indigenous to the country’s costal region. During the Californian gold rush, South American travelers who passed from Panama to California told inquiring Americans that they bought their hats in Panama, perhaps out of geographical confusion, or perhaps to protect Ecuador, its land, and its people from outside influences.

Today, Ecuador continues to be the largest producer of the so-called “Panama Hats,” but rather than protect their origin they are eager to share it with the world! The artisans’ only request is that instead of saying “Panama Hat” you call it by its proper name: “Sombrero de Toquilla” or “Sombrero Montecristi.”

Whatever you choose to call it, make sure to swing by Zenful U and pick up a beautiful hat for you or a loved one for the holidays 🙂

Welcome to Otavalo, where all the magic happens! When I first visited this site 6 years ago, I was immediately enchanted by its colors, its people, and its land. Unlike other shiny tourist spots that I had been to, Otavalo felt more real, more authentic, more wholesome at once. This, I believe, is due to the work ethic and philosophy of its inhabitants. The Otavalo people consider themselves not to live above nature, but within in. Their ultimate goal is not to grow, but to preserve; creating a clean and sustainable lifestyle in which all members of the community, from young to old, play a vital role in how they care for animals, protect the land, and produce their goods. Truly, each item from Otavalo is a living being, an organic expression of the Earth and the people who tend Her. While I hope that all of you have the good fortune of visiting Otavalo for yourselves one day, in there meantime here are few pics which the show the pueblo and her people at work and play. As always, thank you, thank you, Shunkuku.
