I had a question on how I generated the cutaway image of the scientific drilling ship illustration I posted recently. The ship is the JOIDES Resolution. It is named for Captain James Cook’s second vessel, the HMS Resolution, in 1772. Over 80% of what we know about climate change came from research conducted on this ship, which is shared by dozens of research institutions around the world.
In the mid-2000’s the JOIDES Resolution was retrofitted. I was hired to build a 3D digital model depicting the ship after the retrofit was complete. I collected as much information about the ship as possible, which included shipyard retrofit drawings with top, aft, front, port, and starboard views as well as each of the new deck configurations. The drawings were crucial for scale and detail information, but materials and colors had to be derived from hundreds of photos. Photos of the ship in the dry dock during the retrofit were particularly helpful. I also needed as many references of the drilling rig, drilling floor and moon pool as I could find. Such detail wasn’t available in the drawings.
With the information in hand, I arranged the drawings into templates, which I used to construct the model Modo, my favorite 3D modeling package. Building the model took over 400 hours since it was so detailed, and it took time to find and interpret more information about specific elements, such as the lifeboats, and the davits which support and lower the life boats.
The final file was used to render out a cover image of the ship at sunset, a ghosted cutaway, multiple views of the exterior, an exploded view of the decks, and a back cover aerial view of the ship at sea.
