End of an era on the Willamette.

Tomorrow, demolition officially begins on Portland’s iconic Centennial Mills building. Before it falls, here are a few things you might not know about this 116-year-old landmark:

Built in 1910 as Crown Mills, it was a major hub for Oregon’s early 20th-century "Wheat Fleet"—ocean-going ships that carried local flour and grain all across the globe.

Just a year after opening, a massive fire in 1912 gutted the upper floors. It was rebuilt immediately and fitted with the iconic water tower that became a staple of the Pearl District skyline.

It wasn't until 1949 that it was sold to the Centennial Milling Company and took on the name we know today.

In the early 2000s, part of the abandoned complex was repurposed as the home base for the Portland Police Bureau’s Mounted Patrol Unit.

After surviving over a century of industrial booms, decades of vacancy, and a devastating fire earlier this month, the water tower and remaining structure are finally coming down. Farewell to a staple of Portland history.

After years of neighborhood advocacy, the Portland City Council unanimously voted to name the SE Holgate Blvd. overpass "The Brooklyn Bridge”, a title the neighborhood community celebrated with an official ribbon-cutting on May 31.

While it shares a familiar name with the iconic bridge in New York, Portland’s version couldn’t be more different and has a distinct local character, serving as an observation deck for the historic Brooklyn Rail Yard.

This yard has been a vital artery for the region since the early 1900s. Forget about maritime ships. Here, we’re all about front-row seats for freight operations. It’s one of the best spots in Portland for a little trainspotting, giving you a front-row seat to watch the pulse of Pacific Northwest commerce move by.

Some magic doesn’t demand a grueling journey; it simply waits for you to arrive.

You don’t need a towering, hundred-foot drop to lose yourself in the music of rushing water. Tucked away in the Mt. Hood National Forest, Little Zigzag Falls proves that beauty can be effortless. Just a gentle, half-mile wander from an old, reclaimed stone quarry, the forest opens up to this hidden gem. It’s the perfect place to sit, let the soothing crash wash over you, and just be.

Have you ever looked at the Oregon State Capitol and wondered why it looks completely different from other state capitols? The history behind it is pure Oregon resilience.

Today we’re diving into a few fascinating facts about our unusual, Art Deco state capitol building in Salem:

Oregon is actually on its third capitol building! The first two tragically burned down (in 1855 and 1935). When it came time to rebuild during the Great Depression, architects threw out the traditional European dome style and built this minimalist Art Deco structure instead.

The 22-foot-tall statue on top is the Oregon Pioneer (swipe to see him up close). Though he looks solid, he's actually completely hollow inside—yet he still weighs a massive 8.5 tons (17,000 pounds!) due to his thick cast-bronze structure, all covered in a brilliant skin of 23-karat gold leaf. Fun fact: The sculptor originally designed him to face West toward the Pacific Ocean, but builders realized he looked better facing North toward the main entrance. So, North he looks!

While the brilliant white exterior is clad in Vermont marble, the interior construction relies heavily on local Oregon Black Walnut wood to bring some Pacific Northwest warmth inside.

Heading up Marys Peak to see wildflowers? Keep your eyes peeled for these:

Oregon Sunshine :This cheerful bloom is a critical host plant for some native butterflies. They lay their eggs here so their caterpillars have a built-in feast when they hatch, making it incredibly important for local ecosystems!

Oxeye Daisy: Despite their classic look, oxeye daisies aren't "true" daisies. They are actually close cousins to massive sunflowers and vibrant asters.

Beargrass: Mythology says these tall plants only bloom every seven years, but the truth is -- it's not so predictable. Depending on moisture and temperature, they might bloom every two to four years, or wait a few decades before showing off.

White Yarrow: Blooming all the way from April to September, this native powerhouse is incredibly adaptable. It's got deep cultural roots, great practical uses, and looks amazing massed in a home garden.

Hello from Marys Peak, the highest point in Oregon’s Coast Range!

Standing tall in the Siuslaw National Forest (just southwest of Philomath and 25 miles west of Corvallis), this 4,101-foot mountain is much more than just a pretty view.

Long before it was given its current name, it was known to the Kalapuya people as chatímanwi - Place of Spiritual Power. For generations, it has been revered as a sacred and empowering site used for prayer, healing, and cultural gatherings.

When you stand at the summit, you can truly feel how special this place is. Facing East, soak in panoramic views of the Willamette Valley and the Cascade Range. Facing West, you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean on a perfectly clear day.

Whether you're looking for a breathtaking hike or a moment of quiet connection with nature, chatímanwi / Marys Peak delivers.
