I listened to a Moth Radio Hour program just yesterday, which included a wonderful live recorded story told by Esther McManus. She told a delightful. story about how she learned to make croissants in her born country of Morocco.
Her ancestors had told and showed her how to for decades and then her dream came true.

Just watch and learn
how to make a perfect croissant from scratch.

GOSH has been invited by the Graduate College to participate in the Fall 2014 Orientation. If you are interested in helping build a new graduate student peer support group, then please let me know and I will put you in touch with the proper Graduate College coordinator. I no longer live in Athens and intend to graduate at the end of the fall semester, so I want to hand the reigns over to someone else who is inspired to develop interdepartmental connections across campus. Grad students can help themselves build better support mechanisms to get through grad school if we put in the effort.

Hi GOSHlings,

I missed you all last Tuesday, but am not too deterred - things change quickly in the world of social media and in the way that organizations take shape. Like ours, for example. There is a wellspring of great potential for GOSH and as many ways to participate in it as there are ways to, to,...well, you tell me, I say something back, listen, response and back and forth. Only this organization is a LIVE participation kind of thing that invites you to share your thoughts and feelings as you're getting through grad school at OU. Currently enrolled grad students and undergraduates considering the grad school track are all welcome to attend. The next one will be Tuesday March 25th at Baker Center, Rm 356.

GOSH is looking at possibly getting a house together of some like-minded students to help foster the dialogue across Ohio University departments - so by definition, we are cross-disciplinary. If you're interested, please write or talk to me. It'd be better to get this ball rolling before the school year ends.

The Athens Post interviewed me today and it should be published next Wednesday. I think it went very well.

Our next meeting will be next Tuesday from 6-7:30 pm at United Campus Ministry in their front lounge - 18 N. College Ave. nearly across from the Athens Police Department. We will be meeting there the next 2 meetings, then returning to Baker 356.

Please, if you have 1/4 sheets or flyers, try to chat it up with some of your friends and colleagues so we can build some momentum going into this semester.

Finally, please like United Campus Ministry at Ohio University (https://www.facebook.com/ucmathens). They continue to be very supportive of our organizing efforts. For you atheists and pagans and agnostics out there - our meetings operate according to some principles of care and concern for our fellow beings, but we do not espouse any particular faith and everyone is welcome.

I hope that your spring semesters are starting off well and I hope to see all of you at some of our meetings.

Bill

UCM (United Campus Ministry) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage the Ohio University and Athens communities in spiritual growth, work for social justice and community service guided by socially progressive and interfaith values.

We will have our next meeting this Tuesday, 1/21, 6-7pm at Baker 356. Please bring a friend and spread the word. We can make a difference with supporting each other through these difficult, confusing and joyous grad school days. Please come.

Like most things GOSH related at this time, our Holiday Party was not heavily attended, but everyone had a groovy time and the food was fabulous. We played a board game called "The Resistance", which was really cool (thanks Chad). Everybody got to pop an authentic English Party Popper Thingy that had cute little toys inside. We wore funny sweaters and cheap tissue paper crowns on our heads.
Next week I will be sending out some news about our next meeting and how we want to give GOSH another kickstart to build membership and hence, to develop a larger pool of people who can share ideas about how they are getting through grad school and finding success in their efforts.
In the meantime, please have a safe and relatively relaxing (I'm sure you all have work to do) break and see you soon.
Remember, this is a kind of forum - so feel free to post!!
Happy New Year,
Bill Rucker
GOSH President

Everyone had a wonderful time. We hope more of you can make it next time around.

We're also going to play games and there will be door prizes. We'll be implanting a new line of cultured haustoria from a transgenic mistletoe/mouse invention we've been developing into your skull if you're up for it. Totally bizarre Christmas sweaters are always fun, but not everyone has one of those - but oddball clothing is encouraged.

I'm thinking that we could also make it a white elephant gift exchange. Wrap up and bring an old holiday decorative item that you have always wanted to get rid of or, if you haven'e one, then buy some $5-10 X-mas kitsch item instead.

Hope to see you. Let me know if you have other party ideas you want to do.

Next GOSH Meeting this Wednesday - Bring some leftovers from your (hopefully) restful weekend that ended in a very full stomach! Drag in another grad student. We are going to talk about what we're doing right, what else we want to do, how to prepare for next Spring semester, and whatever else comes to mind that keeps us occupied in good conversation about this grad life. Hope to see you!
