Phase 4 — What cannot be seen is what holds everything together.
Once the foundations are in place, the jacket begins to build its invisible architecture. Fabric and canvas are initially worked separately, as webbing, natural reinforcements and structural elements are positioned to create support, balance and three-dimensionality. Canali does not use fusible interlinings. Instead, carefully distributed ease allowances allow volume to emerge gradually from within.

Phase 3 — The canvas gives form to what does not yet exist.
The canvas — the hidden soul of the jacket — is created. Canali is among the few houses to still construct it in-house, calibrating it to both the fabric and the Canali fit. Horsehair, webbing and natural reinforcements are shaped through stitching on special concave forms that reproduce the anatomy of the chest. Long before the jacket is complete, its volume, balance and natural ease have already begun to take shape.

Phase 2 — Precision begins with seeing.
Technology and sartorial expertise come together. Each length is photographed, analyzed and digitally mapped to identify imperfections and variations, guiding every decision in the cutting process. Components are positioned with extreme precision to align stripes and checks, optimize the fabric and minimize waste. Cutting is the first irreversible gesture: the moment material begins its transformation into a garment.

Behind every Canali jacket lies an extraordinary depth of construction: over 200 sartorial steps, carried out through a precise sequence of techniques, gestures and decisions.
For Under the Surface, we have distilled this process into eight essential phases — each revealing a different aspect of how a Canali jacket is built.

Here's the phase 1: Before form, there is material
Everything begins with the selection of the finest fabrics and precious natural fibers, sourced from Italy’s most respected textile mills. Each length is carefully inspected by eye and touch, because certain qualities still cannot be entrusted to machines. The fabric is then stabilized through steam and specific treatments, preparing it to retain its character and performance over time.

Beijing, where Under the Surface began.

On October 23, Under the Surface — Shaping the Unseen opened in Beijing as a concept exhibition. Stefano Canali, President and CEO of Canali, and artist Lihuai Qian opened a dialogue between Italian sartorial culture and the art of bamboo weaving.

Actors , , , and , joined guests in moving through Lihuai Qian’s suspended bamboo panels, the making-of footage and the craft displays, discovering up close what lies beneath the surface of a finished creation.

Heritage lives in the making.

Welcome to Under The Surface Beijing Event.
A dialogue between the work of artist Lihuai Qian and Canali’s sartorial mastery, where material, gesture and precision reveal the hidden structures of creation.

Lihuai Qian, in his own words.

His practice begins with listening: a gentle tap against a cane, a faint metallic ring revealing a mature stem. The bamboo is then split, scraped, bevelled, dyed and dried, until each strand finds its precise width and suppleness. Knowledge passed through generations becomes an intuitive understanding of the material.

The dialogue with Canali begins here, with heritage and with the care that keeps it alive. In both, inherited knowledge lives through the hands and sensitivity of those who practise it.

Bamboo carries the memory of the hands that have shaped it for centuries.

Born into a family of bamboo weavers, Lihuai Qian lives and works in Wuzhen, in China’s Jiangnan region, where he carries forward the intangible cultural heritage of Wuzhen bamboo weaving. For the Beijing chapter of Under the Surface, Canali commissioned three suspended panels. Across their woven surfaces, cubes and blocks seem to rise and recede, their apparent depth created entirely by shifts in the density and direction of the weave.

In Qian’s panels, the supporting structure becomes the image itself. In Canali’s tailoring, it rests beneath the finished silhouette.

Heritage lives in the making.

Under the Surface — Shaping the Unseen, an international project that brings Italian sartorial culture into dialogue with contemporary art.

At its heart is a question shared by both worlds: how does the work that takes place before a creation is finished shape everything that is eventually seen and felt?

Four artists, Diego Perrone, Brian Rochefort, Lihuai Qian and Thukral & Tagra, have each created an original work for the project, exploring through their own practice what lies beneath a surface. Italian artist and filmmaker Yuri Ancarani follows, through film and photography, both the creation of each artwork and the making of a Canali jacket.

Four works, four artists, four cities: Beijing, New York, Milan and Mumbai.

The journey begins in Beijing on 23 October with Lihuai Qian, the artist featured in this video.
