What happens when we replace criminal penalties with a public-health approach? 🍄
A new peer-reviewed community survey of 163 people living in areas with psychedelic decriminalization found overwhelmingly positive reported outcomes.
🔹 84% said decriminalization improved at least one area, including legal risk, social acceptance, safety, availability or product quality.
🔹 Nearly 75% reported improvements in access to or acceptance of psychedelic therapy.
🔹 72.4% reported improvements in overall life conditions, including stress, anxiety, community connection and relationships.
🔹 More than 27% said they had reduced or stopped using traditional pharmaceutical medications following decriminalization.
Perhaps most striking? Not one participant reported that their legal risks had gotten worse.
The findings suggest that removing the fear of arrest and criminal consequences may influence more than legal outcomes it can affect how people seek support, talk about psychedelics and approach healing.
But there’s an important caveat: this was a relatively small, self-reported survey with a participant pool heavily connected to psychedelic communities. Researchers say larger, long-term studies are needed before drawing conclusions about causation.
The study also raises an important equity question: How do we build psychedelic policies that protect public health without pushing aside Indigenous traditions, legacy practitioners and communities disproportionately impacted by the War on Drugs?
Decriminalization may be one piece of a much larger conversation about health, safety, access, equity and community-based healing.
What do you think the future of psychedelic policy should look like? 👇🏾

Five years after legalizing adult cannabis possession, Virginia is officially creating a legal retail marketplace.
New legislation will allow recreational cannabis sales to adults 21+ beginning July 1, 2027, with the state preparing to license up to 350 retail stores statewide. Applications for retail licenses are expected to open February 1.
The law also increases the personal possession limit from 1 ounce to 2 ounces while continuing to allow limited home cultivation.
Supporters say establishing a regulated market can help shift consumers away from the illicit market by improving product testing, labeling, accessibility, and consumer protections. State projections estimate the program could generate approximately $51 million in revenue during its first year through cannabis-related tax collections.
As more states continue shaping cannabis policy, Virginia becomes another example of how legalization conversations are evolving beyond possession and into market structure, public safety, and economic opportunity.
🌿 What impact do you think regulated adult-use sales will have on Virginia communities?

The continue! VA is for LOVERS 💚

Virginia leaders announced a newly negotiated agreement that would legalize regulated adult-use cannabis sales beginning July 1, 2027 following the governor’s veto of an earlier proposal.
The updated framework focuses on creating a safe, legal, and regulated marketplace while aiming to reduce reliance on the illicit market and expand opportunities for small businesses and farmers.
Key proposed changes include:
✔️ Adult-use sales launch July 1, 2027
✔️ Legal possession and purchase limit increases to 2 ounces
✔️ Cannabis excise tax increases from 6% to 8% after two years of legal sales
✔️ Public consumption would carry a $250 civil penalty (not criminal charges)
✔️ Equity and economic access remain central to the conversation
Lawmakers also emphasized that communities disproportionately impacted by past cannabis enforcement should have meaningful access to opportunities created by legalization.
If approved through budget legislation this month, Virginia could move one step closer to building its adult-use market.
💭 Do you think Virginia’s approach strikes the right balance between access, regulation, and equity?
