KanchipuramUS: Our journey so far

Picture a weaver family that hails in the villages and towns in India. To make a handwoven saree, the entire weaver family takes turns on the loom to weave in order to increase their output and earn more money, really sweating it out to make ends meet. Not only is each family member collectively involved in the weaving of a handloom saree but also each person is equally responsible in the running of their family unit. The weavers have immense experience and knowledge about the fabrics, textiles, yarns, zari. They are an expert to offer their own creative inputs in the making of a beautiful handwoven saree. They experiment with their creativity all the time to keep up with the changing trends in a 6 yard drape year after year. There’s no limit to their imagination and it’s a family team work. A weaver family is a small entrepreneur in their own family unit and they deserve the same dignity & respect as the famous fashion designers of the day.

A weaver inherits the skill from their forefathers at an early age, thats what makes them an expert of the weave. Handloom is a dying skill, rapidly being replaced by Power-Loom. For power-loom produces fast & at cheaper rates. Power-loom productions are merely a six yard of fabric, hardly personalized, all workers are just a part of the machinery, a mechanical system where repetition is the savior & uniqueness brings doom. As masses are drawn to the attraction of low rate, left with no choice, many weavers have unwittingly adopted power-loom but still there are quite a handful of humans in the remote areas who refuse to give up their tradition and what they stand for. Today, in the fast pace world of multitasking, where hi-tech is the new mantra. Handwoven Saree, to stand their ground, need to make a powerful statement & create an impact.

This is where KanchipuramUS comes in!!!

We’ve traveled across the world, visited small towns & villages in pursuit of meeting local weavers, interacted with them in our humble attempt to learn about their craft. We have certainly been overwhelmed by the beauty & detail in their work. Its been really tough to handpick just a few weaves from their immense lovely and unique creations. Their positive attitude, openness and flexibility to work with us on designs, color and creativity is what touched our heart the most.
