News but not really. For decades research has shown that low income and low performing communities have the LOWEST performance outcomes in reading. When tracking growth, data shows shows that even Asian, Native American, and the Hispanic population have better growth gains than African American students over time. Working in low performing schools exposed me to how funds are not properly allocated, resources are not plentiful, and the type of SUPPORT teachers need often IS NOT provided. With this, I will add that there are some cultural/generational factors that contribute BUT what are WE doing to combat that?
READING IS THE FOUNDATION TO ALL ACADEMIC SUCCESS‼️ It is a cause that deserves to be CHAMPIONED! Righteously so.

I’m often so excited to see the students when they come in with their hair When I fully processed the idea of it, it immediately thought of the cultural assimilation of the Native Americans. Who exactly do they think they are molding these students to be? Who’s idea was this? Who refused to speak up?

Part of being the part is looking the part. While school uniforms assist us with maintaining a certain amount of order with uniformity, many of our young men are receiving hand me downs from older siblings that are too big. Our desire to initiate this belt drive is to assist these young men with becoming more comfortable with looking the part. We want sagging to be perceived as socially unacceptable. I came across this and I am in total awe. Not that I don’t believe it but it strongly applies to why equitable solutions in education should be a priority. Trades are valuable solutions. Imagine had this man had an option in middle or high school to engage in a sewing of design class; he could have very well been designing tuxedos or casual wear for his friends. College readiness is not an ideal solution for EVERY student. Fear of failure runs students off, lack of preparation runs students off, a lack of belief that they’ll ever catch up will run a student off. Focus on building relationships so that you can assist students with identifying how to optimize and profit from their gifts and talents. Be a guide.

It’s important to keep them close, creating a space where they can freely communicate because you never know what could be next. I’m big on values; and helping others see and appreciate the value that they bring. Kind words cost us nothing. But they go a very long way. Sow positive seeds 🌱
