Walking into this motherhood journey like…

Not gonna lie, I am a little nervous about becoming a mom, but I have the best husband ever and a big support system.

Even though my own mom isn’t here to guide me along this path into motherhood, I have the lessons and values that she instilled in me. 🥰

Thanks to the in-laws for throwing this baby shower for us and all the friends and family who showed up.

Finally sharing my big news! After 4+ years of trying to conceive and having a miscarriage, I’m pregnant with a healthy baby girl!

It’s been a long few months, and honestly after having a pregnancy loss, it’s scary sharing the news of a pregnancy, but I have faith that I’ll be holding my heathy baby girl in the new year.

It’s sad not having my Mom here as I transition into this new role as a mom myself, but I’ll share my favorite life lessons that she taught me with my baby girl and I know she’ll always be in my heart.

Now, prepare yourselves as I start this journey as a sustainable mama and please share all the tips you have on raising eco-friendly, earth-loving children. 💚💚

After all the eating I did yesterday, the last thing I want to do is get out of bed. Instead I’m going to lounge all day in my comfy h**p bralette and boy shorts from . 😅

I’m actually not doing any shopping today. There are some great sales from sustainable brands I love, but I truly don’t need anything and I haven’t put much thought into gifts for others yet, so no shopping for me.

If you are shopping today, I encourage you to support sustainable small businesses.

Here are a few of my faves:
- is offering 40% off all of their h**p un**es (affiliate link in bio)
- is offering 20% off metal razors (gifted my sis one and she loves it)
- is offering 20% off their entire site (they have a variety of sustainable products)

Are you shopping today?

Does your hair define you?

Up until a couple of months ago, I’d never had extensions, braids, dye, or even relaxed my hair. I felt like since I had “good” hair, that I would be appropriating by doing any of the styles above.

But after expressing interest in wanting to try faux locs, a dear friend offered to help install them (she did 95% of the work). And now I’m upset that I never tried other hairstyles, particularly protective styles, sooner!

For so long I felt defined by my curly hair. I’d gotten so many compliments, so much praise for something that I had no control over. I felt it would be ungrateful to change my hair in anyway other than occasionally straightening it.

Since having these faux locs, I realize how skewed that thinking was. My hair doesn’t define me. Instead, it can be a form of expression. I can try different styles and still be me.

Have you had a complex relationship with your hair?

One of my favorite parts about having a capsule wardrobe is how easy it is to mix and match pieces to make new outfits.

I spent the last few days at a cabin in the Great Smokey Mountains, and when I was packing for the trip, I was able to pack just a few pieces and two pairs of shoes to create several cute outfits.

When creating a capsule wardrobe, I would suggest choose neutrals and a couple of accent colors. The neutral colors I choose are white, tan, and black. The accent colors are olive, burgundy, and soft pink.

It also makes shopping so much easier cuz I know what will go with other pieces in my closet.

Do you have a capsule closet?

Mermaid vibezzzz

Since dressing up as a 🧜🏾‍♀️ for Halloween, I realized how little I post about mermaids anymore on my feed. Welp, that’s gotta change.

Idk if any of the other Ariels out there have embraced the connotation with our name, but it took years for me to like my name after being traumatized while watching The Little Mermaid with my kindergarten class. All the kids turned and looked at me whenever Ariel’s name was said. As a shy kid who’d never met anyone else with my name, I was mortified!

After wanting to change my name, but not finding anything suitable, I accepted that this was my fate in 4th grade. But I still hated when The Little Mermaid was associated with me.

It probably didn’t help that I looked nothing like that Ariel.

It wasn’t until middle school that I finally embraced the mermaid connection when I found a book in a back-owned bookstore in the West End Mall in Atlanta. It was a children’s book with illustrations of black mermaids.

Literally changed my life.

Up until then, I thought that mermaids could only be white. Never crossed my young mind that I could be a mermaid too. This is why representation matters.

That year, I painted my name on my bedroom wall along with a couple of black mermaids. (swipe for a pic of teen-aged me)

Since then, I’ve loved all associations and meanings of my name. Now, when I’m telling someone my name over the phone, sometimes I say “Ariel like the mermaid, Green like the color”. Gets a chuckle every time.

Have you ever wanted to change your name?

Rare mermaid sighting on land! Has she been captured by a….pirate?! 🏴‍☠️

Obviously I would only be my alter ego for Halloween. And with a little coaxing, got the hubs on board to show out as a pirate. We don’t usually dress up for Halloween but we were invited to a costume party this year and decided to really go for it. Hubs was really in character too - swipe to see a pic. ➡️

Everything I already had in my closet except… the skirt. I bought it on Amazon. Don’t cancel me. It’s something I plan on keeping and rewearing as much as possible. Because wtf would I ever dress up as anything else?

Also kinda bubbled up (mer-slang for excited) about my makeup. All organic or vegan and earth-friendly.

Splash a 💦 in the comments if you agree that I should be a 🧜🏾‍♀️ every Halloween or costume party.

Oh, in case you were wondering, the mermaid spoon is my take on a dinglehopper. We know a fork would tear up these locs, but the spoon can create flawless waves. 🌊

It's been a year since I started gardening in my local community garden, and I've learned so much about growing veggies. As temperatures start warming, many of us are starting to think about starting a garden and what we'll be growing. If it's your first time starting a garden, I have a few tips to help you be successful. Check out my newest YouTube video for the full rundown.⠀

✏️ Planning⠀
- Decide where you want to grow then determine how many hours of sunlight it gets⠀
- Know your USDA Hardiness Zone (Atlanta is Zone 8)⠀
- Look up planting schedule for your hardiness zone & what grows best (swipe to see zone 8 planting schedule)
- Make a list of what you want to grow, then narrow it down to manageable scale⠀
**Easiest to grow: leafy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce), peppers, beans, squash, cucumbers

💰 Purchasing⠀
- Decide if starting seeds vs starter plants⠀
** As a newbie, I recommend buying starter plants from the local nursery⠀
- If growing in containers, see if you get secondhand; grow bags are also great⠀
- When choosing soil, select based on if you're growing in ground or container & get organic when possible⠀

🌱 Planting⠀
- Starting with transplants will give a better chance of success plus it's quicker⠀
- Always follow instructions on packaging, however sometimes you can plant closer than indicated⠀
- Water immediately after planting and several days following until plants get established⠀

🥕 Maintenance⠀
- Water consistently throughout the summer months⠀
- W**d frequently; lay down mulch to prevent weeds⠀
- Fertilize every couple of weeks (compost, liquid fertilizer)⠀
- Encourage pollinators to come to your garden⠀
** Plant native wildflowers and provide clean water source (the pollinator bucket from is cute & efficient)⠀
