So Sister Sew, Not Just for a Profit but For a Purpose
So Sister Sew which provides sewing services is created by Aakhu Maá, aka EmunahYah Bhat Ysrael and Valorie Nixon Carter. She credits her interest in sewing to her grandmother Pauline White Harper, though she herself did not sew. Her grandmother gave her and her 2 older sisters a brand new sewing machine. A spark was lit in Maá and she out o
f the 3 began sewing. She sewed not only because it was useful but also because she enjoyed sewing, being creative, and wearing her own style. She is self-taught and she later took sewing classes in Home Economics at school where she was once voted best dressed. She ventured off into professional modeling for several years and became locally successful. The lure to wear “designer made clothing” made her lose desire to sew and wear her own clothes. Later in her life while pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics, she acquired courses in professional sewing though her innate interest in sewing did not resurface completely yet. She took the courses merely to refine her skill in sewing. After she gained knowledge of Self the need to sew sparked again. Like the main character in “The Pursuit of Happiness,” she like him is in pursuit. However, he was in pursuit of happiness; she is in pursuit of the Spirit. It is often said “do what you love and love what you do.” She thinks doing what one loves allows the divine creative spirit to flow. She loves to sew and love is divine therefore doing what she loves which is sewing awakens the divinity in her. That is why for her, sewing is a passion. That being her past, present and the future the only thing that is left to say is, So Sister Sew.
