Dear Friends of Maya Star,
What a long, strange, and utterly beautiful trip it’s been. As I turn the page to a new chapter in my life, I find myself reflecting on the journey that led me here, a journey that began with the adventurous spirit of my parents, Rick and Miki. They ignited in me a love for the eclectic and the beautiful, taking our family to Guatemala, where life was woven with vibrant textiles, spirited bartering, and the rich tapestry of folk art. It was there, among the huipils and wrap skirts, and later at the old Armadillo and the Artist Market on the Drag, that I learned the art of retail – an art that was as much about survival as it was about passion.
My father, with his visionary eye, saw potential in a quaint little space on what was then a sketchier part of South Congress Avenue, an area we now affectionately know as SoCo. It was more than just a location; it was a dream waiting to be realized. With his belief in me and a some Central American antiques and folk art, we laid the foundation of what would become a significant part of my life.
Roaming the world for the most beautiful and unique items – from folk art and jewelry to crystals and clothing – I've had the privilege of sharing others' beautiful creations with my customers in Austin. This journey wasn't just about finding things; it was about discovering stories, understanding cultures, and connecting people with something more than just an item – it was about bringing joy and beauty into lives.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible people who have been part of this journey. My partner in life and adventure, Richard, has been my rock, my creative counterpart, and my fellow explorer. Together, we've witnessed South Congress grow and evolve, just as Maya Star has. Our customers, staff, and the SoCo community have been the heartbeat of this endeavor. From those who lent a helping hand in tough times to the landlords who believed in our vision, every person has been a thread in the fabric of this story.
As Richard and I prepare to embark on our next adventure, traveling and soaking in all the incredible experiences this world has to offer, I am filled with gratitude. Thank you, Austin, for embracing us, for growing with us, and for allowing me to be a part of your lives through Maya Star. This isn't just a goodbye; it's a celebration of all the memories we've created together and the anticipation of those yet to come.
With heartfelt thanks and endless gratitude,
Maya Star Krauss
