ANNE CROTEAU
I have been working in professional theatre and the bridal industry for over 20 years. As an undergraduate Theatre Major at the University at Albany (SUNY), I discovered a passion for the technical elements of costume construction for an individual actor. After earning my Bachelors of Arts with a concentration in Costuming, I went on to the prestigious Krannert Center for the Perfo

rming Arts at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatrical Costume Construction and Design. After graduation, I spent several years creating costumes for shows at the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard University. In addition, I have held positions at many seasonal theatre companies and worked in the alterations departments of several bridal shops, learning the business. I was an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Theatre at the University at Albany for the last 8 years. During my senior year at SUNY Albany, a friend asked me to make her wedding gown and a whole new passion was born. I love working with brides and I love making a dream come true. While planning for my own wedding, I discovered that the process is exactly like live theatre. You have your stars, your supporting players, your costumes, your scenery, your audience, etc. My experience in live theatre has influenced my approach to bridal design and planning. The construction process for a bridal gown is the same as an elaborate costume. Unlike off the rack and name labels, any bridal gown I make is truly one of a kind, just like the bride who wears it.

Art is the exploration of the human condition. Every human has stories worth telling. We don’t always have to come to the same conclusion, but true love for humanity is being willing to “replace judgment with curiosity.” I implore everyone to simply be willing to listen to the stories.
I was proud to accept this award on behalf of my students and colleagues.

The Department of Music and Theatre is truly honored to receive the 2025 Unsung Hero Award. 2 professors attended the ceremony last week to accept the award on behalf of our students and faculty. Congrats to our whole department for a wonderful year of work towards equality and justice.

“This year we’d like to honor the Department of Music and Theatre. Please welcome faculty members
Michael Lister and Anne Croteau.
This award recognizes a University at Albany community member or department whose work behind the scenes or whose contributions to the
LGBTQ+ community have not been formally recognized. While many voices have indeed sung in this very room for generations, we are proud today to join the chorus line. We thank you, as a place of refuge and of creative outlet, that we might continue to discover ourselves and each other through these arts.”

Our thanks to the office of UAlbany Student Affairs and Enrollment for this recognition.
