The young Black Panther Party leader, Fred Hampton, was assassinated by the Chicago Police and the FBI while sleeping on this day in 1969. He was only 21 years young. R.I.P.

234 years ago today, Prince Hall petitioned the Massachusetts state legislature to provide education for black children. Blacks were taxed on an equal basis with whites, but only white children received state-supported education. Needless to say, the petition was rejected.

Today, in 1956, Nat King Cole made television history when he became the first popular African-American host of a variety television series. The show didn't have commercial sponsorship because many viewers and advertisers didn't want to support a show with a black host. The Nat King Cole Show, which remained on the air for just over 13 months until December 1957. He paved the way for Arsenio Hall, Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson, Sammy Davis, Jr. Oprah Winfrey Montel Williams Queen Latifah and others...
