Since 1983, the Bald Head Island Conservancy (BHIC*) has been dedicated to protecting one of the East Coast's most important sea turtle nesting habitats through conservation, scientific research, education, and community outreach. Their work helps safeguard nesting mothers, monitor hatchlings, study how sea turtles are adapting to environmental changes, and protect the barrier island ecosystems these incredible turtles call home.
This nesting season has already been an exciting one! The Conservancy has documented 70 sea turtle nests, 89 false crawls, and 42 nesting mothers, including several beloved "legacy" turtles that have returned to Bald Head Island year after year. One remarkable turtle, Timber, has been nesting there since 2001. Marking a beautiful reminder of why protecting these beaches is so important.
