The Firefighter Cancer Support Network has revised and reaffirmed crucial cancer prevention steps for firefighters, emphasizing the importance of adopting these 12 steps. The recommendations stress not only the established protocols but also the necessity for firefighters to maintain high-quality sleep, regular exercise, and a balanced diet. These lifestyle factors play a critical role in reducing cancer risks and enhancing overall well-being. Let's engage in discussions on best practices to protect our community's health and safety. https://www.firefightercancersupport.org/ffcam

Female firefighters are diagnosed with breast, cervical, ovarian, and other cancers at significantly higher rates than the general population. The fact sheet developed by the IAFF and FCSN sheds light on the unique challenges these women face regarding occupational cancer. It is crucial for firefighters to engage in discussions around prevention strategies, early detection, and support for affected firefighters. Awareness and education are key in addressing these pressing issues.

Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, Week 2, is here. This week, we will focus on reproductive cancers that affect both men and women, along with other reproductive health concerns related to firefighting. We’ll discuss recommended cancer screenings and encourage firefighters to take a proactive approach by getting the necessary tests and performing self-examinations when appropriate. Additionally, we will explore the personal motivations behind reducing cancer risks and dive into eight essential initiatives that firefighters can implement to modify risk factors and decrease the likelihood of a cancer diagnosis.

Commonly, dermal absorption to carcinogens found in soot can occur even while wearing turnout
gear when soot is transferred to the fire fighter’s skin either during firefighting activities or while removing
contaminated PPE. Elevated temperatures, as routinely experienced by fire fighters, have been associated
with increased dermal absorption. Steps can be taken to reduce dermal exposure and include on-scene
gross decontamination, wiping of skin, and showering and laundering station work uniform upon arrival
back at the station.
