Just how cool is Fair Trade clothing? This is the FTF mark on Passion Lilie's tag, a New Orleans company that I purchased wholesale from. This Fair Trade Federation member secures artisans and seamstresses with fair wages, long term, stable employment, and a safe, positive working environment with many working from the family home where operations have been set up for generations, as well as in cooperatives, in the Bangalore and Andhra Pradesh, India areas.
They are also committed to using eco-friendly materials throughout the supply chain, shifting from 100% Indian cotton to 100% Indian organic cotton (the best!), as well as assuring that the dyes are safe for people and the environment.
Fair trade-based organizations (non-profits & wholesale partners) work to bring artisan and ethically-produced goods to a broader market like the United States. This opens the door for fair payment that the artisans otherwise may have a difficult time commanding in their local markets.
