Southern Textile Association (STA) President Nathan Fisher, key account executive, Daikin America, keynotes today’s Southern Textile Research Conference (STRC) today at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort.

Holding up a T-shirt created during his time as a student at the NC State Wilson College of Textiles, Fisher reminded attendees that without textiles “we’d all be naked” — a humorous but powerful reflection on an industry that touches nearly every aspect of daily life. The shirt was designed in the 1990s by alum Keith Black, now director of Product and Technical Development at Fibertex.

From apparel and home furnishings to aerospace, automotive, defense, health care and advanced materials, textiles remain one of the foundational industries behind modern society and American manufacturing. Events like STRC continue to showcase the innovation, research and collaboration driving the future of U.S. textiles forward.

Jesse Daystar, Ph.D., chief sustainability officer at Cotton Incorporated, Cary, N.C., brought a clear message to today’s Southern Textile Association Northern Division Spring Meeting at Revolution Mill in , N.C.: the market is shifting from sustainability as a choice… to sustainability as a requirement.

From EU legislation and U.S. policy to growing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws, Daystar outlined how compliance is rapidly reshaping fiber selection and supply chains — and why manufacturers must be ready to prove, trace and verify their impact.

He also highlighted a key advantage for cotton: as a natural, biodegradable fiber, it avoids many of the microplastic concerns now gaining regulatory and consumer attention — an issue increasingly tied to synthetic materials and under growing scrutiny worldwide.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway: circularity, traceability and data transparency are no longer “nice to have” — they’re becoming the cost of doing business.

Dr. John T. Dalton, economics professor at Wake Forest University, takes the stage at today’s Southern Textile Association Northern Division Spring Meeting at Revolution Mill in , N.C., delivering a data-driven look at where we’ve been — and where we may be headed.

From the rise of global trade and the impact of the “China Shock” to today’s evolving tariff landscape, Dr. Dalton walked attendees through the realities behind the headlines. One key takeaway: while trade has played a role, it’s not the whole story when it comes to manufacturing job loss — with structural changes, technology and domestic policy playing an even bigger role.

He also emphasized that U.S. manufacturing output has held relatively steady over time — even as employment has declined — highlighting a shift driven by productivity and innovation, not just trade.

Perhaps most importantly, Dalton challenged the room with a forward-looking message: the future of U.S. manufacturing won’t be decided by trade policy alone — it will depend on our willingness to build, innovate and create a culture that supports it.
