We Wield the Hammer provides free metalsmithing training to young women and girls of African descent in Berkeley, offering access to a craft that’s traditionally been unavailable to them. The 8-week program teaches fundamentals in sawing, soldering, stone setting, and fabrication —skills that can lead to apprenticeships, careers, or just the joy of making.

We Wield the Hammer (WWTH) provides free metalsmithing training to young women and girls of African descent in Berkeley, offering access to a craft that’s traditionally been unavailable to them. The 8-week program teaches fundamentals in sawing, soldering, stone setting, and fabrication —skills that can lead to apprenticeships, careers, or just the joy of making.

Do you know what a rose cut is?

Diamonds that are rose cut have larger, broader facets compared to the brilliant cut. Whereas brilliant cuts have an intense sparkle, rose cuts are softer and more understated.

Originating in India, the rose cut was later embraced by European gem cutters in the 16th century. Its popularity rose in the 18th century with the advent of cleaner-burning, more affordable candles, as the rose cut's broad facets caught candlelight beautifully.

While most diamonds today are brilliant cuts, the rose cut is enjoying a renaissance—particularly among collectors drawn to its quiet beauty.

I have a confession to make. I can never say no to a good handmade mug.

There is something so comforting and luxurious about sipping creamy matcha or fragrant tea from a mug made by another human.

I’m in awe of ceramic artists who literally take clay from the earth and sculpt it into functional objects with their own two hands.

There is so much thought put into picking the exact right clay body, the curvature of the handle, the rich and buttery glaze, and the heft of the mug in your hand.

On the left is a mug I recently bought from Mallie and Sven of at their seconds sale. On the right is a mug I bought from them 10 years ago at a craft fair.

Both mugs remind me of misty mornings in the mountains of Taiwan, and they bring a little bit of home into my daily routine.
