I'm all about the awl, I love this tool. I have given up the habit of using a tracing wheel and transfer paper to mark my darts. So instead I just clip my open dart legs like notches and awl punch my fabric ½" above my dart points (or ⅛" inside my closed darts). Then away I go to sew them up. See how to sew these darts without the traced lines in our Elements of Sewing on-demand video class!
See you there.

How are Y'awl doing? Here is where I'd like to share some essential sewing and patternmaking tools and how I use them.

Y'awl, meet the Awl. The awl is great for both sewing and patternmaking. Here the awl is being used to push and hold piping/welting in place for sewing AND keeping my fingers safe at the same time. Win win.

Thanks for inspiring us to make a croquis in your image AND use one of your beautiful quilts to "illustrate" what students will learn in our Adobe Illustrator class. In addition to the software basics and drawing their or customer's body, students will create textiles in Illustrator that can be manipulated to look like fabric that is cut, sewn and worn. This is helpful for conveying ideas as a designer/technical designer and it also allows you to try out designs, prints and proportions without having to pattern or sew anything!

This online class starts this Thursday!
4:00pm - 6:00pm
June 25 - July 2

Check out Bob's beautiful feed and also his post on the blog about making his jeans. We read that he was working on and we wondered if maybe he would be uniting his sewing talents into one garment. Were we right?

Students must pre-load the software onto their computer prior to the first day of class. Individual work time will occur throughout the Zoom meeting and questions are answered in real-time. Details for the Zoom meeting login will be emailed to registered students.

One of our main objectives at GarmentWorks is to design, draft and sew garments that work for every body. We all have unique and beautiful bodies that need to be represented. An "industry standard" dress form or fashion illustration rarely represents a real and very beautiful human. In our class Adobe Illustrator for the Apparel Industry we teach students to create a croquis, or fashion template, that represents their body. Having an accurate to-scale sketch makes the whole design and production process go a lot smoother. This is how clothing gets designed in the apparel industry, by the way.

We are offering this class online!
Thursdays, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
June 25 - July 23

We are reposting a photo to create a personalized croquis that can be used to create designs, even add textiles (we also teach you how to create your own print too) and add more dimension. Thanks so much for letting us dress you. We hope you like the look we created for you. If you do these textiles are available from a store we all know and love

Students must pre-load the software onto their computer prior to the first day of class. Opportunity for individual work time will occur throughout the Zoom meeting so that questions can be answered in real-time. Details for the Zoom meeting login will be emailed to registered students.
