Starting mountain training early. šŸ”ļøā¤ļø

At just nine months old, he’s already discovering one of hiking’s best tools: trekking poles.

Okay, maybe he’s using them a little differently than most of us, but the benefits are the same—better balance, more confidence, and a little extra support on uneven ground.

Whether you’re taking your first steps or your thousandth mile, trekking poles can make the journey a whole lot easier.

Tyee Lakes conditions: No mosquitoes yet!! There are very few patches of snow to the 2nd lake, then lots of snow starting at the 3rd lake. The 4th lake is only half water so far. Table Mountain holds a bunch of snow, but the steep descent to George Lake is snowfree. There are more snow patches below George Lake, but they soon become small enough to get bypassed via dry ground.

Everyone tests sun hoodies for their UPF rating. But the real question is: what happens when your pesky hiking partners start throwing snowballs?
This one passed, stay tuned for the next test.

Bears are wild—keep your distance, secure food, and don’t give them access to food in you cars or campsites. Most bear problems come from human food and preventable situations, not natural behavior.

šŸ“øThanks to Chris for the snowy bear photos, Kurt for the Whitney Portal car break-in image, and Jean for the Cathedral Peak photo.

Walking out to Parsons Lodge and Soda Springs might just be the best half-mile walk on Earth. Breathe in the wild, open expanse of Tuolumne Meadows as views stretch toward Unicorn Peak and Cathedral Peak. It’s one of those places where every step reminds you just how special this landscape is. Like Dr. Seuss says, ā€œIt’s opener there in the wide open air.ā€

Tioga Road reopens today at noon! 🐻

As you head into Yosemite’s high country, please remember that while bears have few natural predators here, humans are their biggest threat. Vehicle strikes is the leading cause of bear mortality in the park.

Please drive slowly, stay alert, and watch for bears, deer, and other wildlife along the roadway. Enjoy the drive, enjoy the views, and help keep Yosemite’s wildlife safe.

šŸ“øThanks Chris for another fabulous photo!

šŸ”ļøBig thanks to Rafael for sharing the beta to Middle Palisade climb on May 23: South Fork crossing was manageable via logs at the first creek. Trail mostly clear to Finger Lake with patchy snow; crampons/axe helpful above the first switchbacks and essential on the upper mountain. Snow softened fast and postholing above 12k got deep by late morning.

It was cruxy getting onto the face as the direct approach to the red rock chute had a bergschrund forming, so they gained the rock at the highest reachable point on snow. That led to exposed low class 5 climbing. They were glad to have alpine gear: 40m rope + cams were definitely used before reaching easier class 3 terrain. Melt is moving quickly so an early start and solid snow/technical gear recommended.

The sewing machine leg is a true reminder that on the other side of challenge is freedom. Plenty of climbers know the feeling…but not many get to experience it high on Middle Palisade at 14,018 ft in early season.

Tuolumne Meadows Conditions Report coming in from Yosemite on May 28. These photos were shot this morning by Chris , who reports that the area has picked up about 7 inches of snow total from the recent storms, though only 2 to 3 inches remains on the ground at any one time because it melts rapidly.

The photos were taken on a walk out to glorious Twin Bridges. A beautiful late season refresh for the high country and a sweet reminder that in the Sierra, winter, spring, summer, and fall can all show up within a few months.

Huge thanks to everyone who shares condition reports with us. This community beta helps so many people get out there more prepared, and we’re always grateful for it. Keep it coming!
