The winter census is in, and while one of my hives decided to check out early, the remaining two are currently thriving with the kind of chaotic energy I usually reserve for a third cup of coffee. It is always a gut punch to find a silent hive, especially when the comb is pristine but darker than a cynic's heart, though the presence of dead brood and empty honey cells suggests they simply ran out of fuel before the finish line.

I spent my brief window of freedom today scraping out enough burr comb to insulate a small shed and feeding crystallized honey back to the girls to ensure they stay on the right side of the grass. Despite the rain and a calendar that looks like a game of Tetris played by a madman, I managed to throw some honey supers on the strong hives because I have zero intention of going through this year without a harvest.

There is a solid lead on a local keeper from the club who might help me repopulate the empty hive soon, so the apiary should be back to full strength before the summer heat really kicks in. For anyone who has ever watched a swarm and thought that looked like a fun way to spend a Saturday, you should absolutely come to our next beekeeping club meeting to learn the actual craft.
