Research for all the details, including reference images from calendar art, stage performances, comic books, tv shows and movies, plus texts, over a period of more than 6 months, helped with all the nitty gritty and details for each character’s looks. Be it the crown or hair, the tilak on forehead, facial hair, jewelry lengths and types say stone, pearl or gold or seeds, each specific point was listed, and discussed with the producers and directors. Budget and material availability were limitations in which creativity blossomed. Visited dress walls in Mumbai for sourcing but rental was v expensive. Friends and family in Pune and Delhi helped check the local stores for supplies but that didn’t work out. Until one of the producer hit the jackpot during her trip to India and could source a lot of dance jewelry, Hanuman’s tail and a few wigs. Local to Boston drama artists and groups were very helpful in guidance and lending a hand for costumes plus props, was able to source few dhotis, weapons and more from them. Sustainability is foundation of my work and plenty of options were sourced and crafted from items the cast members owned, right from jewelry, sarees to dupattas and more. Few items were purchased for future shows as an investment by the production. Working with passionate and dedicated team members, all amateurs and volunteers, showcased not just their talent but their generosity too, for all the time and efforts spent supporting each other to make the show happen.
