I was strangely inspired to do these sketches for one of the shows I‘m working on. I rarely make sketches, usually preferring moodboards - my art is in stitchery and not drawing, so my sketches rarely capture what‘s in my imagination. So it is with these doodles, but they still have an aesthetic charm to them.

Another project finished! I absolutely love sewing up historical shirt patterns - it’s the magic of turning plain rectangles into forms that drape attractively over the body. This one‘s in a sheer woven stripe, with front layering detail.

A school costumer’s tech night tableau: but few hours to finish some mending and repairs before opening night tonight! Time alone in an empty theater can be nice after a whole school day of hurried rehearsal. The particulars may not always be the best, but in the balance i do love my job~

Did you know I also do costume design? Right now I‘m absolutely obsessed with this fabulous velvet garment in a fusion of Ancient Greek and Pre-Raphaelite styles, freshly made for a show in a few weeks. Of course it has a very different effect on me than it will on the actor, in the space, but I just can‘t get over the opulence, the air of power and wealth that oozes from every shimmery fold. Sometimes I surprise myself.

Recently finished: three shirts for a LARPer with excellent taste. Plain cotton shirts made with a mix of 18th century and modern pattern details for that grounded-fantasy aesthetic. And finished with rose embroidery on the final shirt, done as applique to give me more control. What a relaxing project this was, straightforward and with pleasant materials.

If you‘re looking ahead to the 2022 LARP season and thinking about some costume upgrades, keep me in mind! These are some of my very favorite projects to work on.

Working on a delightful commission, using all the knowledge I‘ve gathered about straight-stitch embroidery in my experimentations over the last year. Not least - take it in small sections, a few roses at a time!

I‘ve been busy sewing, as usual. Check out this enthusiastic vest that I recently finished! I‘ve been experimenting with adding more darts, and i love the line the darts make into the pointed hem on this vest. It closes with hidden snaps under all those butterflies.

Interested in a vest of your own, or other commissions? Contact me here or through the contact form on my website!

Three new jersey “sweater” layers, made in rapid succession in a fit of productivity this weekend. I haven‘t had many commissions, so I have to find things to fill my time - luckily I‘m pretty good at inspiring myself.

If you‘ve got a neat garment or some alterations in mind, hit me up! I recently did a little job just hemming some pants and a coat - no job is too small!

Over the last couple months, I‘ve been experimenting with corset patterning. I got corsets on the brain after I was comissioned to make a corded corset last fall. With all this spare time in covid furlough, I‘ve been enjoying experimenting with different seaming and stiffening methods - I don‘t make tightlacing garments, so it‘s about flex and gentle tension instead.

Speaking of spare time, I have plenty of time open for comissions - if you or someone you know would be interested, you can message me through this page, or contact me through my website, queenofbirds.com.

These embroidered bird patches played a starring role in sprucing up some plain linen dishtowels. Each one is about 2 inches square - such little things were very quick to finish compared to whole vest fronts and other embroidery I usually do!

Made this lovely wool coat for a friend of mine whose aesthetic I know well. I made it from stash fabrics, both pilfered from stock cleanouts at places I‘ve worked. The dark red fabric had a number of wierd moth holes, but they were easy enough to mend, although the discerning eye might be able to find the textural blemishes left behind by that process. The closure and decor is simply formed of fabric tubes stitched flat, and domed buttons covered with matching fabric (wool with its springiness is perfect for a smoothly covered button).

From the vault: two button-front maxi dresses, with slightly 70s vibe. These are super simple garments - the blue one doesnt even have integral waist shaping - which makes them excellent displays of the fabric, and good canvases to show off belts and other accessories. Plus the buttons can be partly unbuttoned to show other layers underneath. Easy cute and versatile!
