Rainbow series: Peridot

Which piece was your favorite?

Peridot is one of the only gemstones formed deep within the Earth’s mantle rather than the crust. It is created under extreme heat and pressure, roughly 20 to 55 miles underground, and is transported to the surface in basalt rock by explosive volcanic eruptions. Some extremely rare peridot crystals have an extraterrestrial origin. They are occasionally found preserved inside pallasite meteorites (stony-iron meteorites) that have fallen to Earth.

Peridot is the gemological name for the mineral Olivine.

Rainbow series: Emerald

Emerald is the highly-valued, green variety of the mineral Beryl. It is given its color by trace amounts of the elements chromium and vanadium—the same elements that give ruby its distinct red color. In Emerald, chromium and vanadium selectively absorb red and yellow light, and the remaining colors combined appear green.

Emerald has been called the “stone of successful love”, nurturing the heart chakra, promoting unconditional love, compassion, and emotional healing.

This green mineral has been prized by humans for at least 6,000 years, and the first recorded emerald mines were built by the ancient Egyptians around 330 BC! Much later, in the 1500s, Spanish explorers discovered massive emerald deposits in Colombia which shifted the global center of emerald production to South America. Today, Colombian emeralds are considered the pinnacle of emerald quality and color.

Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May.

Tanzanite is a highly-valued purple-blue mineral found only in an 8-square-mile region in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Though closely related both chemically and structurally,Tanzanite differs from Epidote in that Tanzanite contains Chromium impurities that give the crystal its unique color and color-shifting properties while Epidote contains iron which gives it a green color.

Tanzanite can appear to change color depending on the direction light passes through the crystal. This property can produce purple or red flashes in an otherwise blue faceted gemstone. A polarized lens is used in the video to conveniently show the different colors contained within the crystal.
