tuck's tooques

tuck's tooques Pro-Autism company designed to teach, develop and support a sustainable young man (Tuck), in operating a profitable business.

Tuck offers fair-trade, high quality, hand-made, Himalayan natural fiber head wear and accessories. The employment outlook for autistic/spectrum folks like Tucker is not at all encouraging. So, we decided, with that thought in mind, we would build our own company and create a sustainable way of life for him. The spectrum scale is a wide band and includes many levels and degrees of the condition. B

ecause one is autistic or anywhere on the spectrum does not mean they are without great value and have much to offer. Quite the opposite is true We love to share our awesome Nepali tassel hats and grow our business, support Fair Trade crafts-folk in Nepal, and pro-Autism Acceptance organizations here in the U.S. Tucker is always excited learning about logistics, finance, marketing, purchasing, philanthropy, planning, communication and he is not afraid of hard work. One example of how we incorporate our business into Tucker's overall growth: When shipping to a client on Donner Pass Road in Truckee, CA.; based on the road name, we did an impromptu history lesson on the horrors that befell the Donner Party during the winter of 1846-47. It was fun, educational and helps Tucker learn in many different ways.

This past three years I’ve opted to add online school to my life in a deep desire to actually learn something. For most of my life, I have not been given the opportunity to learn something I didn’t already know, with the exception of a couple of teachers who attempted to presume competence.

These individuals saw in me abilities that no one else did. For this, I am extremely grateful. Mrs. E in elementary, Teacher Tammy in middle school, and my mom all along recognized glimpses of intelligence, that I fought hard to show because they saw me as a whole person.

Many others saw me as half a mind, incapable of compassion, when the reality is many of us disabled in some way have a heighten sense of others’ mental and emotional state. We feel things so deeply that our emotions overwhelm us. All of this contributes to our struggle to stay regulated enough to function.

To be constantly misjudged on the basis of our rogue body is so demoralizing and to be excluded from the conversation is a great detriment to those who need to receive our compassion. Many of us hold the keys to solutions that will greatly shake society if we are given a voice and listened to. To be viewed as whole people with intelligent minds, compassionate hearts, and bodies that need training like any athlete is to be empowered to take our place in society, and more importantly in family.

Many of you wonder how we learn things we have not been explicitly taught, and this varies depending on our environment, but starving brains will digest anything that comes across its path. In this way, we learn by listening more than talking, something that society would benefit from. We spend most of our days, listening and observing and considering the great and unspeakable wonders that God has hidden from the wise and reserved for the humble.

Choose to seek His still small voice today away from the torrent of words and noise. Find Him in the stillness and listen while you can with your whole self.

Love,
Jack

Good morning, family. I am struggling with seizures this weekend. This makes spelling more difficult. Seizures for me are brought on by stress. I need calm and rest to recover.

Yesterday I met with others non-speakers over Zoom, and I was so excited to be connected, but even good stress can cause absence seizures. I had a few of these seizures that only last a handful of seconds, but really disrupt my ability to communicate and cause a migraine, wiping me out for the rest of the day. This was so frustrating to once again be so betrayed by my body, but I still wanted to be present for my other friends. One of them said this was their first time to purposely build relationship. To not have this opportunity for two decades is a common tragedy amongst spellers.

To empower us to communicate is not only to unlock our intelligence which will undoubtedly change the world and our family picture of our reflection of the image of the Father, but also redeem our connections and prevent many from death. Because to be disconnected from meaningful connections is death. Many of us who have lived most of our lives without the ability to connect have wished we were dead. This is our living hell.

I reached this point at age 15. This was a low point, and I managed to type, “I want to die” on an iPad at school. My teacher called my mom, and mom talked to me about the reasons I had to live, and they were all the people who love me. My family has always tried hard to find ways to connect with me. Reenacting movies, singing songs together, and creating bedtime stories has become our connection point. These efforts kept me alive. But to really deeply connect, to truly live, I needed language expression.

This was why I knew I could not give up on spelling to communicate, even though it was the hardest thing I have ever done. To want something so much, causes my body to self sabotage. I know there are spellers and parents out there who are frustrated by their slow progress, but I am here to remind you that to give up is death.

As hard as it is for communication partners to deal with a rogue body, please remember it is 1,000 times harder for your non-speaker because they want this more than you. This is the elixir to life. Do not withhold it. To my non-speaking counterparts: We need you, and you need us. Do not give up. Life is worth it for the sake of connection. Connection is life. Reach for life and hold on.

Love,
Jack
