Brookfield’s Hidden Legacy

Jane Moore/Thorne, born a slave in Kentucky was moved to Linneus. After emancipation she moved to Brookfield in 1870. She had three children; William Henry, George, and Emma Stanton.

William Henry, with help from his brother, founded The Freeman’s Journal. This was one of the first black newspapers west of the Mississippi. They also spent time working at the Brookfield Gazette. The Freeman’s Journal became nationally known. William’s grandson, Charles became a Tuskegee airman in WWII.

Emma’s son, Edward Rucker, graduated from the Garfield School and gave a well delivered salutatory speech as noted in the Brookfield Gazette. This was notable as Eddie Rucker would go on to be quite the entertainer. He moved to California and became a kingpin of entertainers who amused thousands alongside legends of jazz.

Still playing football. Chasing a dream. Jaden Abongo has spent years searching for his place. Never easy. His journey has been filled with highs and lows. From state championship wrestling, to multiple colleges, his dream college, to finally finding a scholarship. It’s a story of adversity that every youth athlete could benefit from.

Along the way he became a social media sensation. He has over 230k followers, over 4.2 million likes on TikTok, and he’s just getting started. Being raised in Brookfield helped shape the humor and stories. He’s now sharing with the world. You’ll love this story.

Custom appliqué sweatshirts are not something I ever imagined myself doing, but these have become some of my favorite things to do. Especially when I know they really mean something to people. It’s one way to really symbolize the love for a person.

These require special design, laser cutting twill, or cutting fabric with our plotter, and then application with care on the embroidery machine. They really are beautiful.
